Military navigation evolved significantly with the introduction of GPS following the Cold War. Precision navigation and timing remain integral to modern warfare and other systems. Former Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall states in his recent manifesto, Lethal Autonomy, that the manned fighter plane will ultimately become obsolete. Today, the convergence of precision, AI-enabled autonomy, and commercial mass production is changing how warfare is waged. Autonomous drones using off-the-shelf components now offer precision at lower prices and in larger quantities. AI-driven autonomy will soon allow a single squad leader to supervise dozens of systems without continuous human direction. Developing lethal autonomy is described as inevitable and unstoppable.
