I finished your novel a couple of weeks back, and I had a great time.  The language is not what I would have expected for a horror action story.  The amount of metaphor was terrifying, but it worked for this work.  It definitely gave it its own unique voice.

The zombies reminded me of the proto-shoggoths in Cody Goodfellow's Radiant Dawn/Ravenous Dusk series.  If you haven't read them, I highly recommend them.  They are Lovecraftian/Science Fiction/Militay/Police Procedural/Spy novels.  Definitely fun reads.  Another thing I noticed was how there was not much of a difference between the vampires and zombies.  Of course, I believe you did this on purpose.

So great work!  I want to know what's next on your plate.

Thanks, John.  Glad you liked the book.  Never read Goodfellow's series, but it sounds like an awesome mix of genres.  I wonder if John Sunseri has read them; seems like something he might be interested in...

Next on my plate: more brains.  I have novellas in several Permuted titles...

* The Undead: Skin & Bones
   -"Skin & Bones": necromancy zombies
* Headshot Quartet
   -"Mortal Gods": zombies vs. superheroes
* Elements of the Apocalypse
   -"Remains": apocalypse by fire

And I'm also planning two novels for Permuted...

* Pavlov's Dogs (w/John Sunseri)
* Prototype (it's a secret :))

And that's about it for right now.  Most of these stories I wrote with a simpler style than Roses, and most of them, with the exception of "Skin & Bones," aren't nearly as sexual.

Thanks, Diva!  By the way, I ate the plums in the icebox.  They were delicious, so sweet and so... cold?  >:D

Hey D.L!

Just finished reading The Bone Garden a few days ago (you might like that, as it's kind of creepy and weird like that) and I'm sixty pages into Roses. I'd probably be deeper into it, but I haven't had a lot of time to read because I have an uncle and aunt who are visiting.

Very good so far! Very surreal; it's like nothing I've ever read before.  ;)

Kody, I’ll have to check out the Bone Garden--thanks for the recommendation.  Sixty pages into Roses, eh?  Very cool!  That means you’ve made it past the sex scenes :)

My hope was that the style would distinguish Roses from its contemporaries.  My fear (and this has been validated by just about every critic) is that I baked too rich a dessert.

Not at all DL ... I think the style of writing was perfect for the book, if it had of been "dumbed down", I think you're style would have been lost in the masses.  A friend of mine who loves Stephen King and horror books in general, and because I had illustrated the cover and internal art, wanted a copy because I did it, when I told her that a book should never be bought for the cover art alone, she read it.  She found the book highly disturbing and it freaked her completely out.  She's stopped about a 1/3 of the way through, she said it was fantastically written, and had the most interesting style of writing which lead to it freaking her out.  Something she has never done or felt before.  So I would count that as a compliment!  How many writers out there can freak out even a remote percentage of the audience/ target readers?!

You mean there's no more sex scenes?  :o

lol, just kidding.

It's by Tess Gerritsen if you can't find it, D.L.

You do a good job at having a different style, a very good job ;D

Stephen, how you doing?  It freaked her out so bad she stopped reading?!  She's got to finish it!  :laugh:

Kody, for the most part the sex scenes are over.  But the sexual overtones ring throughout the book--especially in the torture scenes  >:D

And there are those readers who are in tune with the sexual overtones...

I think the whole sex thing adds more depth to the book. Usually, it doesn't work, but it does for Roses because of the situation.

As an erotic horror, it's quite powerful...

Yeah every time she comes to visit I tell her that she's doing herself an injustice by not reading all the book.

I'm doing well, got my plate full at the moment for work (still), and I'm been away from home a far bit lately due to the company that I work for has been taking over other retailers.  Been working hard on my novel, and a few surprises up my sleeve (working hard on some covers at the moment, which I can't public announce yet!  I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise anyway!)

My boy's growing up fast too ... and somehow I feel like I am missing too much!
