Gah!  Sorry, ZM.  I was just looking back at this thread.  I remember I had a ton of trouble posting and it looks like the boards put up two of my attempts to answer your previous post.  It makes it look like I'm slamming your comment on The Hunter.  Sorry about that.  :(

No worries man. I didn't see it like that. Hell even if you were slamming me I am not that sensitive. I enjoy a good debate that gets heated!

Thanks though.

By the way, for those keeping track, John Carter's made over $210 million world-wide.  It supposedly beat The Hunger Games in Europe.

Still more proof that this is the biggest debacle ever ::)

I have nothing against John Carter but this made me giggle

Quote
Disney has announced it expects to lose around $200,000,000 on ‘John Carter’, which not only cost $250 million to produce, but spent another $100 million on advertising. Advertising which gave people the impression that this movie was about aliens in Arizona fighting a really good jumper who was wearing He-Mans chest plate for some reason.

It's kind of an odd situation all round. John Carter was ridiculously over-produced with a ridiculously high budget and really crappy advertising (the later of which crippled Big Trouble in Little China despite the mammoth amount spent on it). However, it's an extremely solid movie which deserves to be a success and to have sequels.

This just proves that the folks at Disney are marketing geniuses. The smear campaign they're running against their own movie is getting so much press.

1. Cutthroat Island (1995)
Net losses, inflation adjusted: $146,947,958
Total cost: $115,000,000
Worldwide theater gross: $10,017,322
Net losses (actual): $104,982,678

1995’s Cutthroat Island is the biggest financial disaster in all of movie history, a fact confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records. That its star and its director still have careers is nothing short of remarkable.

Starring Geena Davis and directed by her husband, Renny Harlin, the feminist pirate movie was poorly reviewed, with multiple critics suggesting that those involved in making it should walk the plank. When all was said and done, the movie lost over $100 million, an unprecedented amount that bankrupted the studio that made it, Carolco Pictures.

John Carter has this to hang on I suppose...

I never read this thread closely for fear of spoilers so forgive the dead horse being beaten...

Just saw John Carter

I have no shame in admitting I have both seen and liked Friday Night Lights. So when I saw Taylor Kitsch was the star I was think his low key acting might be the reason this movie bombed. But he was great.
Another reason I thought it bombed was the cheesy looking sets. But those were great. The cheesy looking aliens looked great too. The leaping guy ended up making sense.

So I can't figure out why this movie bombed. I thought it was fooking fun as hell. A cross between Thor and Sherlock Holmes if that makes sense. And both those movies did ok right? The commercials were shit but surely that wasn't solely the reason it failed? Guess I'll go read this thread now...

I felt the movie had no energy.

We needed to sell John Carter is a righteous man who is also a Confederate. One who is willing to overlook the skins and species of intelligent races to unite Mars.

We needed to sell Mars is alien and beautiful and worth saving.

We needed to have him want Dejah more than life itself.

We need to see him choose Mars.

Really, sadly, John is mildly interested in Mars and really wants to go home.

It didn't work for me.

I saw this recently too.  I was not engaged, but loved his dog like creature.

Well I'm definitely not saying it was a movie I'd by but I'm certainly stunned by the reception it got. And I'd love to see a sequel.

Yes, I'd read The Zombie Survival Guide as many times as the next guy, but my whole Z-Plan revolved around -not- getting close enough to the deadheads in order to fight them in hand-to-hand combat. No thanks. Just stay the hell away and put one between their eyes from a safe distance.

Besides, any movie with Detective McNulty is sure to kick ass.
