Have any of you ever been to or know anything about "Zombie Walks?"  There's one happening in my area in September, and the only thing I've been able to find out so far about it is...well basically a bunch of people get together, dress like zombies, and have a parade through town. Been to the website, Crawl of the Dead I believe it's called. Wasn't much help. I shot them a quick e-mail, wasn't much help either. I was thinking, since it's coming here and I'm a local girl, it might be a good chance at some *coughs*promotion*coughs*

I participated in one in Manhattan - it was a Zombie Walk to End World Hunger.  We dressed up as zombies (and let me tell you, when I was doing my make-up I completely forgot about the hour subway ride to the meeting point).  Our meeting point was in a salon so those with little to no zombie make up skillz could get the basic green on and some peeling skin.  I went as a zombie writer (had a pencil in my neck and was in a college graduation gown).  From there we walked around and through a park trying to gather more people, then we took a group photo and from there we went to Whole Foods and everyone bought a bunch of food.  Some zombies were rowdy (and the PA system warned A. that there were zombies in the store and that B. we better start behaving - again, the few overzealous were grabbing people, a no-no).  Then we marched down to a food shelter and their food bins overflowed with what we bought (there were about 200 of us). 

Then some people got even MORE rowdy and we ended up stopping traffic and a group began throwing themselves against a stopped city bus and well, we had to move faster after that.  We went to another park where a 'mark' was set up and we devoured him, pulling out his intestines (pantyhose filled with paper towels soaked in red water) and had a blast.  Some young kids were there, and some of the zombies and the kids (like, 2-3 years old) began to dance.

It was a lot of fun.   I met a lot of people, we talked, joked around, and helped out the food bank.

Vic: sounds like a lot of fun. Where there any other kinds of events going on with the walk? Not like a carnival or street fair per say, but anything else happening where people could get involved, like booths or stands or whatnot. I've been told this particular walk will end at this old goth prison we have here, but as far as what's happening there once the parade ends, I haven't a clue. I was told to get in touch with the organizer. So I suppose I'll have to hunt that person down...

Heard of 'em, yes.  Familiar with 'em, yes.  Ever been on one, uhmmm, no.  (Times and availability and stuffs always precludes.)

However, that being said, I've heard nothing but fun things from them.  Here in Toronto, one of the oldest organized walks, it has always been a great thing.  What they do here is:  Gather at a central spot, and shamble to a long standing rep theatre, and then watch a double bill of zombie flicks.  It's a well organized event, lots of people have fun; many more gaze and wonder, what the...?

Quick note:  Almost every Walk I've heard of, usually position themselves as a charitable event (raising money for charities, etc.)

Other quick note:  What's the best thing in life that is needed as an author?  A network.  If you like zombies, go to the event, have fun, bring business cards and make friends.  Most people go to these things to have fun; which does not preclude making connections with new people in new ways.

My suggestion?  Get make-upped, bring your book, have it secured in a waterproof "bag thing" tied around your neck, and when people ask you: "What's that around your neck?"  You say: "That's my book, here's my card; feel free to visit and follow me."  Or stuffs to that effect ...

Self Promotion - only you can promote your self ...   

But, most importantly, have fun.

Great advice Zak, thanks so much. Don't know if my book will be out by then, but I could and will do everything else you mentioned. Now I'm excited!!

Oh, and I don't think any of you are close enough to attend, but just so ya know: it's going to be held in Moundsville, West Virginia on September something or other.

You know, for living in the local area, I've had a hell of a time digging info up on this thing.

But I finally figured out it's on Sept. 24 from 6pm to 9pm. There will be a street fair going on all day prior, then the parade, which will end at the Penitentiary. They are collecting food for the local food bank, so yay I'm glad I finally figured that out.

Right now there are close to 800 ppl signed up to walk in the parade (holy crap) and they're estimating a few thousand folks coming into the area to mill about throughout the day (holy crap). It's the weekend after HR, so I believe I'm going to partake in the walking dead goodness.

It seems like the idea sank in at Poland perfectly. In few major cities zombie walks are taking place once in a year. Society itself is still a little bit to stiff to get used to the idea, but youngsters have fun while parading in ketchup smeared, half torn outfits.
