Signing this first batch of books has re-kindled my excitement a bit, but the truth is, I got fired up when I received a couple of emails from folks that bought my Butcher Bride novel at Con-Tamination and reached out to tell me how much they dug it. Those comments really put a bounce in my step. I'm looking forward to readers enjoying The Blackest Heart. I really dig blending genres, and like the upcoming COWBOYS & ALIENS flick, I think the sci-fi and western genres make for a fun mix.

Anyone remember OUTLAND?

Got a whole lot swirling around beyond the normal writing workload. Trying to set up some local signings for late summer and into the fall. Doing my best to get in a position to have The Blackest Heart sequel, Pandora,  make it out for Halloween signings. Beating the bushes for as many book reviews as I can get for The Blackest Heart too. Still mining Hollyweird for an option on The Butcher Bride. Hoping Cowboys & Aliens has a great opening weekend box office so some doors for my outer space western redux might draw more interest. Still working on filling out the story for my Hyde graphic novel project. Been struggling to complete the last segment on the script for The Blackest Heart graphic novel.

The simple act of writing is really the easy, fun part of the biz. The rest is the meat and potatoes many writers aren't nearly as keen on. And its many of these other things beyond tapping the keys most new writers dream and anticipate their big time publishers will take care of for them. If only it was as easy and singular as writing a story and simply showing up for book signings...

I'm now 2 books ahead  of myself, and working on number #3, and starting to plan number #4. I had a goal to put out 5 new novels in the next 5 years, but I might actually revise that notion. Perhaps instead of shooting to have a book published once a year, I can squeeze that down a bit to maybe 9-10 months. I can make much more $$$ that way while really not having one novel's sales infringing on the next. I'm currently writing stand alone books, not a series, so I'm enjoying the newness of each project along with honing my skills with each effort.

I'm so happy with my writing right now. There's no pressure to write a vampire or a zombie novel, though I'm strongly considering a zombie project after the current dark superhero thing I'm working on now. There's just so many vamp and living dead books out now, I just feel like, why add to the pile  when I can stir the pot of my imagination a bit more and bring something different to the table for readers.

Like an original dark superhero novel. There's plenty of time for fangs and dead flesh down the road. Then again...

Been on a writing roll. Every writer who has ever been on a great roll knows there's hardly anything creatively better thatn cranking out great keeper page after page. I always wish I could type faster, or stay awake longer. And the thing is, you KNOW it's good stuff. You know that short story is going to sell, or that this latest book is going to garner some great reviews, or that this script is going to finally open that Hollyweird door for you. Women often know the moment they get pregnant. I think writers often know when they've created something special.

The Watchmen really primed me to create this current project, and The Dark Knight lit the fuse. I just hope my original heroes strike a cord with readers and they dig the world I create. Of course, if your heroes and villains don't cut the mustard, well, you're screwed.

Let's hope Midnight & Ol' Scratch get the job done. I think they will. I just have that feeling...smile.

And then on to the zombie epic. Well, maybe.

Scouting out review opportunities. Fleshing out plot for future graphic novel. Figuring out character names for current dark superhero project. Setting up book signings for latest novel. Selling copies of new novel like a carnival barker. Mentally simmering on a possible short story idea. Researching option opportunities for a recent book. Seriously contemplating working on a horror screenplay. In the midst of updating the website. Woke up concerned about cover of upcoming book despite dreaming of a solid idea for a dark detective book series. Working to get latest novel into more brick and mortar bookstores.

Time to write.

Well, excitement abounds - I'm finally working on revisions to Pandora, the long-awaited sequel to The Blackest Heart. It really has been forever but the light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger and bigger. I'm jazzed for the world to read and enjoy the continuing adventures of my resurrected Star Marshal and my ugly, monster filled genetic dumping ground.
I'm also super jazzed about the book's cover, which I'm hoping will blow me away like the one for The Blackest Heart. Can't wait to see what the artist came up with. A great cover goes a long way to selling books, along with the fact it serves as the best icing to top a finished project you have great hopes for.

At this point in my career, I can't afford mediocre. Not now. Not EVER.

Been struggling with a cold, but hopefully getting over the hump. Being sick for a writer is quite the flip of the coin: you either feel too dang lousy to create OR the illness and meds make your imagination explode and you come up with some of the craziest shit ever. In this case, I felt too dang lousy to work, but that's O.K.

So much swirling but so little happening. Still trying to secure more review possibilities for The Blackest Heart redux and praying every day that Pandora arrives in time for my Halloween signings. It's been a great year, but 2012 could be a freakin' monster if I get a little lucky and everything comes to pass. But even if only 1/2 of the projects come to fruitation, next year should prove to be another strong step forward.

Hopefully I won't have to battle a sore throat or a nasty, head rattling cough.

It's October, which means Halloween is right around the corner. If you're a writer of dark fiction, it's hard not to get excited. I've got a big signing set up in my home town, and it looks like my 4th novel, Pandora, is going to be out in time. Righteous.

Funny thing - I came up with an idea for a future book. Heck, I might even stop working on my current project and start on this new idea. My 5th book, Good Night My Sweet, is already written so I've got options.

I'm going to call it Seven/7. (No possible relation to the classic Freeman/Pitt flick) It's in the vein of The Stand. Well, sort of. That's all I'm going to say about it. Exciting times abound.

I love being a writer.

Big Halloween book signing in less than 2 weeks. Trying to set up another big signing in early December which will also double as a food drive for my town's food bank.

If both are as successful as I hope, Christmas will be saved, and some extra local families will benefit. Everyone wins.

Well, the perfect storm is over, and I'm the one who needs FEMA...

Sold and signed 13 copies in just over 2 hours. Expected to do 3x that. Just goes to show that perfect, well, never is.

Looking forward to redemption at my next signing in just over a month. In the meantime, gonna sell a ton from the trunk of my car, as usual.

The goal:

to sell 1,000 books.

How long it will take?

The target is 6 months or less.

I love the challenge.

Sell. Sell. Sell. Sell. Sell. Sell. Sell. Sell.

etc.

I might take Thanksgiving Day off.

But if I can sell a copy, I will!

Made myself a deal - if I sell enough books, I'll just write during the upcoming school holiday break. Hoping to drop at least 100 pages during the time off. Been a while since I've done some serious writing. I'm long overdue for a major creative purge.

Writer first. Salesman when I have to be.
