Anthrax - Worship Music
« on: February 10, 2012, 06:15:01 PM »

. . . i was skeptical about this album. i've loved Anthrax ever since the first time i heard Among the Living. it was always good stuff. and THEN, they fired Joey Belladonna (the singer) and hired John Bush from Armored Saint for the album Sound of White Noise. i was blown away! this, this is the way Anthrax is supposed to sound!

so, it's been a while since they put out an album, and i heard they'd gotten Joey Belladonna back for this album, and i was skeptical. see, Anthrax had put out an album of classic songs, re-recorded with the John Bush line-up, and holy shit, it sounded good. but it's Anthrax, so i got Worship Music.

my GOD, this album kicks ass! Joey has matured into his voice, if that makes sense, and the lines and lyrics match the music perfectly. matter of fact, i can't even imagine John Bush singing some of these songs. he doesn't have the range. high points on the album are:

The Devil You Know
Fight 'em til You Can't
In the End (!!!)
The Giant
New Noise (Refused cover)

"Fight 'em til You Can't" is a zombie apocalypse song. "In the End" was written as a tribute to both Dimebag Darrel and Ronnie James Dio, and the music is epic and full and awesome, the lyrics fitting and the singer really kills it.

i can't recommend this album enough. lost count how many times i've listened to it so far. top notch!

One of the best albums of 2011 for sure. In the End is an instant classic!
John Bush just never did it for me while he was fronting Anthrax, I'm a Joey fan and have been since the 80's.
Only album to eclipse this was the Arch/Mathoes release.

You probably like Iron Maiden better with Blaze, too?

Lead singer and NASCAR driver? Impressive.

don't be ridonkulous.

when Maiden got Bruce, they changed their musical style to match their singer's wider range. when they hired Blaze, they didn't take his more limited range into account and the music suffered for it. The X Factor isn't a bad album, but it wasn't great. on the other hand, the Blaze and Bruce Dickinson solo albums stomp all over the the last three or four Maiden releases.

i also prefer studio Judas Priest with Rob Halford, but live Priest with Tim Owens.

Ripper shines when emulating Rob.  His work with Yngwie is generic, to be kind about it (other than the Ozzy tribute, which soared).

Newbie chiming in:

Almost a year later, and it's still very rare that WORSHIP MUSIC leaves my CD player.  God, what a great album.  I'm with Thom -- I great up with Belladonna-fronted Anthrax, but thought that the band moved into a wonderful new era with John Bush.  IMO they were soooo much stronger with him at the helm.  So when I heard they had given him the boot and re-hired Belladonna, although I liked Belladonna, I thought it was a big step backwards.

However, I stood corrected once I heard WORSHIP MUSIC.  'Cause this one kicks ass all over the place!

Volume 8 and We Have Come For You All were decent, but really not up to par with the Sound of White Noise nor Stomp 442.

I need to give this a listen!
