No matter what I do my e-mail address shows up under my avatar therefore I put in a bogus e-mail and my real e-mail is in my signature. Trying to prevent spam here people!

That's because you can always see your own.  ;)  As long as you have "Hide email address from public?" checked in your profile settings it won't show up to anyone else.
