Alison Recht, Zach's sister informed us today that Z is no longer with us, he passed away yesterday. The cause is unknown presently. I haven't been able to confirm this announcement, but I did call his phone and left a message. I will also try to contact his family to confirm this as I am in shock and cannot believe this has happened. Of course I am holding out hope that this is some sick joke being played on me. I sincerely beg for this scenario to be true because he was one of my best friends and supporters. I will definitely let you all know once I have confirmation.

I don't know what else to say. I'm in shock right now.

Update to add the obituary:

Zachary Allan Recht, 26, died on Dec. 10, 2009, at his home.

He was born Feb. 4, 1983, to Keith A. and Mary Recht of Bunker Hill.

Zachary is survived by his parents; a brother, Adam Recht, of Pittsburgh, and a sister, Alison Recht, of Bunker Hill.

Zachary was a professional writer and the author of two published books of apocalyptic fiction. He was recently recruited by Simon and Schuster.

He was also under contract with Audible Books for his books available to download for listening read by a professional actor.

Zach attended Inwood Primary School and Bunker Hill Elementary. He was a graduate of the Powhatan School in Boyce, Va. He also attended Handley High School, of Winchester, Va. Colleges attended were West Virginia University and Northern Community College. He was a unique self-educated historian.

Zachary was employed in 2007 as a staff writer at The Journal newspaper. This year he was an invited guest author to the "Horror Realm" convention in Pittsburgh, where his fans were able to meet and greet him, as well as listen to readings from his books. He also has participated in the "Poetry and Prose" Writer's Day here in Berkeley County.

He completed boot camp in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson, S.C., where he graduated as 1st squad leader and won the sharpshooter competition.

Services and interment will be private. A public memorial service will be held and announced at a later date. Please contact Brown Funeral Home at http://www.BrownFuneralHomesWV.com.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Z.A. Recht Scholarship-Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 193, Bunker Hill, WV 25413.

His sparkling wit and intelligence surely will be missed by his family, friends and by all of his fans.

Oh . . . Wow, I'm sorry to hear this.  Until it's confirmed though, you might want to pm Jacob and modify this post.  (Would his sister joke about something like this, though)?  I suppose Matthew can delete it all if it turns out for the best and ZA is okay.

I am sorry, Diva.  I didn't know him, but he seemed nice the few time I spoke with him.

I didn't mean to imply that his sister would lie or joke. I meant that it could've been an imposter pretending to be his sister, and playing a joke. His best friend Adam has confirmed it. I hope to speak to his parents and then I will post a link to the obituary once it is available.

I'm sorry everyone. This is very hard for me, but I'll do my best to keep everyone posted.

I hope his family is doing okay.  I know he was on the boards on the 9th.  Again, I'm so sorry to hear this.

I'm not sure if I ever talked to the man, but it still sucks to lose him.  At least you got some wordage out there before you left.  Godspeed, brother.

I called Jacob's private number and left a message.

So far I haven't found an announcement in Z's hometown paper but it might be too soon of course. Maybe tomorrow there will be an announcement. If anyone is good at google please help me look this info up.

His full name: Zachary Allen Recht. I won't post any other information out of respect for his family's privacy, but I was hoping that someone might aid me in finding out some more specifics.

Well, that sucks.

I met him at Horror Realm and found him to be a fun and happy fellow.  He was interesting.

I am saddened.

Wow. I had no idea there was anything wrong. My heartfelt condolences to his friends and family. I wish I'd known him better. It is truly a massive loss.

I've got his friend Adam's phone number. He was the dude sitting next to us with the laptop at Horror Realm. Adam was Z's best friend his whole life, they grew up together. I am going to call him right now, even though I am afraid of what I'm going to hear. I will post any news as I receive it.

I'm also sorry Matthew about what info I did post. It was fairly common knowledge to those of us that were close to him, and it wasn't specific enough to actually locate his family directly. I was hoping it would aid in finding confirmation, since this feels so unreal, even though I know it is the truth. I apologize for crossing any lines. I imagine the obituary will have the pertinent info as far as to where the family would like to have condolences sent. I will try to attend the services, if it is possible.
