Lady Gaga
« on: October 04, 2009, 11:28:58 AM »

So, despite dear Kody's numerous praises and photos of her, I'd never heard a single Lady Gaga song or seen a single performance until last night's Saturday Night Live.

And, I must admit, it was kind of enjoyable.  Although I don't really know if I'd call her a musician.  Between the costumes, dancing, and random shifts, it was almost like watching a performance art piece.  A good one.  Which is rare. :)

To be honest, in an odd way she kind of reminded me of Laurie Anderson... for anyone whose memory goes back that far.   ;)

Which one did you see? Paparazzi, or the medley?

The reason I like her so much (other than the fact that she's eccentric as hell) is that she's such a good singer. Like you said, she doesn't seem like a musician, but a performer. She's bringing back what it actually means to be a star--the dancing, the costumes, the works. The fact that she SINGS LIVE while doing this only gives me further respect for her.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/sl_xD-L377o" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/sl_xD-L377o</a>

Oh--she also co-writes or has written all the songs on her album. I'd like to think that the majority of her songs were written by her (as in, the body of them,) but have had other people add bits and pieces here and there. I mean that in the way that artists like Akon and Space Cowboy have helped her write songs, but once again, I think she wrote the majority of them.

I didn't like Paparazzi at first, but it was mostly because the album version is a little too bubblegummy. THIS live version is awesome, but so is her VMA 2009 one.

Also, check out her medley she preformed as well (which is what I was most anticipating, mostly 'cause I thought she was going to debut the pop version of 'Bad Romance' [after the lovegame part.])

Yes, it is true that Pat and I had also neither seen or heard anything of Lady Gaga before the SNL episode last night.  It was...entertaining...but not really my thing. (We prefer the Yeah Yeah Yeahs live performances.) Lady Gaga seems like a newer version of Bjork.
We thought she could use a performance where she's inside a giant hamster ball, a habitrail constructed around the stage, and the background dancers using giant chewsticks and sunflower seeds as props.  ;D

I don't doubt she'll do something like that in the near future. She's already been murdered on her MTV performance and had flaming, sparking boobs on the Much Music Awards. She's too amazing NOT to do something like a hamster ball performance.

I never considered the Bjork comparison, but I see Bjork as... well... more surrealism pop/rock than anything. GaGa sounds a little more mainstream. Thank God she's NOTHING like the newer stars personality-wise though. I don't think I could take another skanky popstar even if you paid me too.

Found the (I think) official, studio version of Bad Romance. It sounds nothing like the demo that was being passed off as the official version.

See, here's the thing. I'm gay, but the two kinds of girls I like the most are the slutty/whorish ones, and the ones that wear crystal dresses and see-through bubble-styled one-pieces.

I thought she was just another bubblegum pop princess at first, but I'm revising my opinion the more I see of her. She seems like another Gwen Stefani in the sense of pushing the envelope and always doing something different and eye-catching, while still being a mainstream celebrity and being sexy as heck. She'll probably always be "Stefani Lite" to me, though.

Technical point - that outfit with the rings was a good idea, but didn't seem to work well in practice. Maybe if it had been motorized to make the rings move more fluidly it would have been effective.

The one ring bobbed her at 1:09, or somewhere in that range. It looked like it might've hurt a little bit.

But yeah, Rob--I agree with you. At first I thought she'd turn out to be another Britney or something, but the more I looked into her live performances, I've realized that she's broken away from the lip-synching live mode. She used to lipsynch/sing to a backtrack a lot more a while back, but now she's hardly doing that at all, using only backtracks when she needs the extra voice in the background.

She's really quite a great live singer; the CD's don't do her voice justice.  I like her because you know what you're getting with her and it's just fun.  My other half keeps saying that she has Bjork beat as far as her costumes and performances go (that is, in the weird department) and that's a good thing.

Kody, I would probably put down some of the lip sync "live" performances down to that most of them were for tv gigs.  Carting a mixing station to every performance that she did for tv, would be a logistical nightmare, as well costly, over-ridding the a/v editing of the show (there really aren't anymore live tv shows anymore ... due to some of the most shocking moments on live tv, even news broadcasts world wide are delayed for over a minute).

I got to say she gets tons of air play in Australia .... tooooons ... while you probably won't catch me singing "I want to take a ride on your disco stick", I find her songs really catchy.  Her singing performance on SNL was well done, I gained a bit more respect for her ... I bet her next album will be nothing like her first (kinda like the style change between Pink's first album and the second). She's proven economically successful, so now she'll be able to do exactly what she wants on her next.

Steven hit on why I'm not too impressed with the Gaga.

She's not P!nk.

It's like skipping a Beatles' performance to see Herman and the Hermits.

same here - I'd never heard her music. And the pics I'd seen previously seemed mostly to accentuate her oddness, rather than try to portray her as hot. Which I think she is, allowing for the thick lower body

Which brings us to your second point, and the subject of another skit on that episode of SNL - her similarity to Madonna. Both dancers (with dancers' bodies). Performers. Showpeople (which sounds funnier than showmen, but I guess it's the right word).

Hmmm.  My opinion of Lady Gaga - let's just keep it to:  "menh".  Sorry, but I'm nowhere near being a fan of her work.

But if people enjoy it, good for them!

Except Madonna doesn't have tickets to the gun show... she IS the gun show.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga has a few decades to catch up with Madge.
