Back Cover Synopsis for Eleven Twenty-Three!
« on: August 23, 2009, 01:22:01 PM »

I submitted a back cover synopsis to Jacob for the new novel, but he had even bigger aspirations than yet another droll description of what happens in the book.  He wanted me to push the conpsiracy angle even further than I did with ESTE, and he also liked the idea of going with a news broadcast-type description as opposed to the standard third-person salesmanship we so often see on popular novels.

So, I gave it a shot.  I just finished it and here's the first draft.  I really hope Jacob and Trav like it, because I am in obsessive love with it.  Jacob was really onto something.

What do you guys think?  Drop me some words or something!  Please keep in mind, the synopsis is supposed to mimic a news anchor's voice, and all the weird stuff going on in the description applies to the novel itself.

Here it is:

A sleepy beach town in Florida is making headlines all across America this evening.  According to the CDC, the community of Lilly’s End is the site of the world’s first major smallpox outbreak since 1972.  There is no word yet from Washington on how the highly infectious disease was transmitted to the town, but military personnel have begun the quarantine process and martial law has been declared for surrounding communities.  The president is urging Americans not to panic.

The turmoil began not long after a local schoolteacher, Layne Prescott, returned to Lilly’s End after five months abroad with his girlfriend.  Surveillance camera footage reveals that Mr. Prescott made contact with an unidentified man carrying a briefcase shackled to his wrist in a Shanghai airport, though who the man was and the contents of the case itself remain unknown.  What our sources have learned is that Layne’s contract with an American high school was terminated for an indiscretion with a student back in April, and that his father passed away in Portland, Oregon only a few days ago.  We’ll release more information on Mr. Prescott and his role in this as soon as it’s revealed.

On a lighter note, there have been some allegations from conspiracy theorists that Lilly’s End is not ridden with smallpox at all, but rather some form of “engineered” contagion that causes its hosts to experience traumatic bouts of violence and suicidal behavior at precisely 11:23 each morning and night.  Photos of chemical exhaust being dumped in grid and parallel line patterns from unmarked airplanes flying over the town are also pouring into the studio, but these radical claims and pictures are probably just more left-wing nonsense.

In other news: thousands of innocent people are being hunted down and executed in Myanmar, and there has been an unprecedented flood of ghost sightings in recent days, but these events are unrelated and probably unimportant.

Now, on to the weather.
