Glad you think so. You know your stuff, so if it's working for you, that's all I can ask.

Tell the nice people if you cry at the end, though. I've had a couple people say they did, and I'm just about in hysterics when I reread it (and I kinda know what's coming at this point)

Thanks for guilting me with all those awesome numbers, Kim.  You finally inspired me to get off my lazy ass to get to work on one of those novels I've been wanting to write. *grumblegrumble*  ;D

56,113 words edited--that's through CH 28.

Accurate portrayal of true bureaucrats, Kim! Reminds me of the forms that the hospital made me fill out while my wife was in labor.

oh, well, being in labor is about the only time a vist to the hospital and filling out forms may have a good outcome. The forms for the hospital and funeral home when my dad died - sheesh. I must've signed my name 100 times. And the really funny part? (Funny weird, not funny ha-ha.) I think to pull the plug on life support (which turned out to be unnecessary, as he passed while I was deciding) - that was about 1/10 as many signatures as all the stuff saying I'd assume financial responsibility and pay for any outstanding bills. And my god the funeral home guy - really didn't have the shtick down well. "Not to rush you in your time of hardship, but do have the first installment ready? Not that there's any rush or anything. You take your time." [hour later, same message on the machine, an hour after that, the same message to my friend with whom I was staying, then an hour later the same message to me after I'd cleaned out the bank account and was ready to write the damn check] - enough dude!

So yes, the bureaucrats are the bad guys, aren't they?

Man, that's horrible. Bureaucracy aside, business has found a way to exploit every aspect of our lives, even our deaths--even our souls. Coffins. Books on spirituality. Little gummy weenies.

I think you played Doctor Jack's show just right: it shows your compassion for the character that you implied what happened. I really appreciated that.

Thanks! I was having trouble at that point , shifting between the POVs, but I think it worked for that character

Loss of innocence applies to more than one in that scene.
