  I just want to put out that All my thoughts and prayers are going out to the Fam and friends of  Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl who is in the hands of The Taliban in Afghanistan. I can't put into words how pissed this makes me. Everytime i see the Clip of him talking on the news my hart breaks.

Yeah, my brother did two tours over there. He went into the military at 17, was shipped over to Afghanistan a day after his 18th birthday and didn't get home until the was 22. He served with Ben Kopp, an Army Ranger who was died yesterday (I think) due to wounds sustained in live fire in Afghanistan a couple of weeks ago.

When my brother came back he told me that Afghanistan isn't getting the attention it deserved, it was much worse there than we were being told. At 22 he'd already been in over a dozen fire fights over there, of course he was a part of detachment that was doing rear-gaurd for the Rangers so that put them in a little more dangerous situations. Now he's sort of screwed up with PTSD.

In all Minnesota lost 5 men this past week over in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I'm glad you posted this Bruce. It hits me worse than many would know, you see my son is in the army. He is in aviation and I don't know where he will be yet as he is in college now, but he said he is prepared and ready to go where ever they send him.
The army has my only son. Bowe is also his mothers only son. I can only imagine what she is going through. Heartbreak doesn't begin to touch it I don't think.

Yeah, I spent over half of my life looking after my little brothers because my mother was a single mother. I'm 8 years older than my brother and given our situation I was not a typical older brother. I often had to cook meals for him, get him up for school, do his laundry and many other things while my mother was at work. In some ways I was probably more like a dad than a brother. So, it was hard seeing my little brother go over there where I knew there would be people who wanted to hurt him and I couldn't help him.

So, I guess I can understand your fears a little.

Kind of blows the ridiculous blanket statement that 'we don't negotiate with terrorists' out of the water, doesn't it?  Perhaps Washington fears a backlash now that the story is breaking.  I don't think they should concern themselves.   A very strong indication on how far apart our government is in relation to its people?   Just my opinion/observation.

It implies the situation is a lot more solid than the chaotic mess it is.

But yes, the human cost has affected everyone.

I'm not sure what you're saying, Charles. Is it that the problems in Afghanistan are bigger and more complex than just the presence of the Taliban?

Yeah.

The Taliban controls its own country but it's not really in Afghanistan but actually a region of Pakistan (Waziristan). I'm simplifying but this is close enough for government work.

Also, it's more a movement than an organized group at this point since US targeted killings have done devastating damage to its leadership but hasn't really impacted the ideology itself. Really, the Taliban's own targeted killings are directed at many of their domestic enemies which leaves the United States sort of befit of local allies.
