What's the one book you think everyone should read before they die?

Richard Laymon's A Writer's Life, if they're a writer.  If not, then SK's The Stand ;)

Pretty hard to come by!  :)  You have a copy?

I would have to say

Robert McCammon's "Swan Song" or his "The Wolf's Hour" ....  I think it tops "The Stand" just.  Both books are good though.

Robert McCammon's "Swan Song"

Good one!  Have you ever read "A Boy's Life"?

Actually, I didn't A Boy's Life.  Last book I read was Koonz's "Frankenstein", which was mildly interesting and a whole lot painful.

A great comic to read is the "30 Days Of Night" series, but not the bloodsucker's tales (snore....) and Black gas (Nice zombie twist).

Is it a crime for artists to read comic books ?!

If only I could get my hands on a copy. Or even a copy of a copy. Really wish a press would bring this back, even POD style...

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, for its sheer brilliance.

I actually tried to get in touch with whoever has the rights over a year ago (probably almost 2 years now).  Either they didn't get back to me or they said 'no'... I can't remember which.  :)

It's a disservice to horror writers to not have such a well-respected guide/memoir still in print.

Maybe in a year or two, the rights owners will free things up.

Tough damned question...

Can I split up my answer?  I mean, everyone should read 'Paradise Lost' and 'The Divine Comedy' and the complete works of Shakespeare and so on, but I'm assuming you're talking about works of horror, in which case I'd have to go with 'Carrion Comfort' by Dan Simmons (best all-around horror novel I've ever read).

But there are so many more that are so essential as well; it almost pains me to just have the one choice.

I would have to say Robert McCammon's "Swan Song"

I agree, Swan Song is a must. Stephen King’s the Green Mile is excellent, too.  Hmm . . . Jack Ketchum’s work would fit the bill: The Girl Next Door, Off Season.  And Richard Laymon has put out some unbeatable titles: Island, The Traveling Vampire Show, One Rainy Night, In the Dark . . . Midnight’s Lair.

Okay, I’ll say Richard Laymon’s Midnight’s Lair.  Everyone should read that.  It’s the only horror book that has given me true shivers, and that’s hard to do.

I've got it on good authority that A Writer's Life will be popping up in the very near future ;)   hang tight!

"Book", huh?  Okay, I'm going to say McCammon's book "Stinger", only because someone already took Swan Song.  (I'll pay big money if someone would drive down south and poke McCammon's muse with a hot, fetid stick.)

In smaller works, you MUST read "Orange is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity" by David Morrell.  It was in the Prime Evil anthology back in 1988.  And it's only a coincidence that we're both from Ontario.  Really.  ::)
