Hey David,

Have to apologize for last night's post... I was feeling a little mischievous.  I had wrote in a way to make you say "uh, oh, what the hell?" before you saw the review.  Of course Empire was an excellent book and deserved five stars.  :)  Hope the review did justice to your book... but....

HA HA! Made you look!  :)

Empire was a great read and look forward to the sequel.  Again, I really liked the Grimm Reaper sequences.  Very well done!

Thanks man! (I thought that may have been your angle in that post - luckily for me I saw the review first! ;D)

To be honest, I prefer the Permuted cover. But I'm so excited for you, it doesn't really matter. Go, Dave!!!

Thanks DL!! I think the original will always be my favorite, but I do love the new one and the way that its font & imagery tie both covers together.

The Permuted 2008 Cover was cool too.  Each has their distinct feel... both versions were great.  I'd hate to have been the one to have to choose which one to go with.   :)

I just finished reading this edition of the book tonight.  Really good stuff here!

You can kind of tell it was made as a serial, but it works in the book's favor.  All the chapters are short and crisp, with lots of action to keep the story moving.  The first third or so of the book actually feels like a collection of interrelated short stories based in the same locale, with various characters from previous chapters stopping by to make cameos.  A reader might have trouble keeping a few names straight early on given the speed with which new characters are introduced with similar backgrounds (namely, the P.O.'s and the military personnel); that said, when the core group of players emerges, it's an interesting bunch.  All of them are very human, and appropriately damaged from what they've been enduring.  And then there's Death.  The Reaper is a strange one--part pulp hero right down to the white (okay, pale) horse and part lost soul at a crossroads.  Better still, he's as confused as anyone as to what's going on.

Highly recommended.

Thanks Pat! Glad you enjoyed it, and keen observations too. It'll be interesting to see how the sequel's pacing compares for readers. Thanks again :)
