I feel so bad for her. :/ To have to plow so much crap....She does at least come across the occasional gem right?

It does get pretty brutal and frustrating for her. She reads for three major contests, I used to read for two.  In the past three years, between us, I think we've read maybe four scripts total that we thought "this really should win something."  So, four out of maybe... 2000 scripts?  :-\

I know I sound like a broken record sometimes, but it is really amazing how many people who know nothing about the film industry--and make no effort to learn--try to break in with scripts that simply never had a chance because of foolish mistakes and choices.  They're the screenplay equivalent of the little baby born six months premature with the umbilical cord around its throat and its heart and lungs outside its chest.

Yeah, statistically, everything has a chance, but there's also a point where the odds have dropped so low that you might as well say there's no chance.  Reading for contests was what made me come up with the 50% rule, which essentially says half the scripts (or any kind of submission) have no chance at all and it's immediately apparent.

Ahhh, rant is building.  And this is not the thread for that...  ;D

Hey, I don't mind. There are few things more calming than some good ranty catharsis and if I went through, I would be equally, if not more ranty. :D Four out of 2000...holy hell.

That is one of the reasons why I am glad that I ahven't really been rushing to get published. I know I don't want to make simple mistakes my first time in.

As for the 50% rule, I think they do something similar with the big presses. For instance, if the title sucks (left hand pile); if the title is good, but the first line sucks (left hand pile); if the title and first line are good, but you can't maintain the reader's attention for the first half of the first page (left hand pile). Personally, I think that is far. I mean, if you really want to make it and get paid lotsa money and live off of writing, you should be able to put forth the effort to make sure that you maintain the audiences attentiont he whole way through (besides, if you bore yourself while reading, it most definitely isn't good xD).

I am writing a script myself, but I am letting it evolve and become its own beast (and I most certainly won't turn in a first, secon, third or fourth draft) before I persue any sort of contest/sale.

If you follow the breadcrumbs on the main site I have a production journal / second blog for members only where I post behind the scenes, bonus free stories plus anyone who joins will be eligible for discounts and other nifty things that I can come up with as a way to say "Thanks for the support".

Three entries are up so far in this spiffy new item, from your Humble Poster here along with Scott Baker of Rotter World fame as well as Branor, the Sub-Mariner!

And more to come, of course...

I'd share my blog but I'm a bit embarrassed.

It was mostly meant to talk about my writing and ideas but ended up just being me talking about my favorite books and video games.

Whoops!
