I put this one in my want category, but can't yet justify buying.
I had a chance to play with one for a while recently, it is quite fun. You get a little progress bar at the bottom instead of page numbers. The purchase and download process couldn't be easier and faster. There was no indication that the download was occurring, the device just suddenly blurped that a new book had arrived, within a minute or so of turning the wireless on. I mostly spent time reading through the manual on the device and jumping around to play with features, I didn't sit and read for a sustained period. But it was good on the eyes.
I see the reports of the Kindle 2 announcements today. Reading through
gizmodo's reports, they definitely improved the shape and buttons on the new model, the old model's giant flipper paddles are gone in favor of more room to hold the device, which is a huge improvement. It looks like it is a consistent thickness, rather than the thick-side/thin-side shape it had, which I approve of. They lost the rubberized backing though, so it should be a bit more slippery when you set it down. And they lost the scrollwheel and weird little sparkly indicator for selecting lines and menu items, replaced with a proper thumbstick for navigation.
