American Fiction of the 1850's
« on: February 25, 2013, 10:24:48 PM »

I'm trying to collect a list of American literature and from the 1850's to capture the language and cadence of the time.   My list is rather short at the moment.  Right now, I have:

  • Moby Dick
  • Scarlet Letter
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin
  • Walden

I'm also considering seeking out local papers of the time to look for regional terms and the like.

Doesn't appear to be too particularly spectacular in the literature lay of the land that time period ... But, interesting nonetheless.

Hope that helps ...

Poe died in '48 so the language of his later works may help.

There's a book you may be able to get hold of at a library. THE TIMETABLES OF HISTORY covers history a year at a time listing the best-selling titles of each year, among other things.
