Honestly, you and your windswept barbarian country. I'm going to have to mount a relief expedition. Expect a train of camels loaded with European movies, metric rulers and books about evolution. We should be there in six months, assuming we survive the trek across the Bible Belt.

We'll hold out as long as we can.  I apologize now if your missionaries are killed and eaten.

Wasn't it?  We're going to see it again tomorrow.   :)

Large assumption.  Backwoods rednecks are only one step removed from the zombie apocalypse as it is--and we have guns.  (And moonshine.)

John Carter. Hell of a lot of fun. Probably would have got more out of it with a better knowledge of the books. My only complaint was that it a seemed a bit rushed.

And Deja Thoris' accent was weird.

Well first off she is a Barsoomian (duuhhh!) and then there's the whole having to wear all those clothes for the movie - I can see that having an affect on her speech as well.  ;)

Piranha 3D... on my friend's 3D TV.

The characters were skin deep, and the plot is pretty basic, but the movie was entertaining. The climax is... I haven't seen a movie with excess gore this fun since Dead Alive.

The Expendables - fun, things blewed up good.

Piranha 3D - Oh my goodness.  I laughed and howled at very inappropriate moments.

Doghouse. Funny and entertaining. Although not very original. Would love to watch this again with a couple of friends over.

Well first off she is a Barsoomian

Yeah, but all the others sounded English (prolly cause they were, at least the main ones). She sounded suspiciously like a Texan pretending to be an English Barsoomian telepathically translated by ingestion of Magical Mars Juice. Or similar.

Religulous

Very interesting. Highly biased as you would expect but I thought it did a good job at what it intended to do.

The only part that was highly disappointing was the comparison to the Egyptian god Horus and the story of Jesus. That drew a pretty big red flag so I looked it up and it was pretty bogus. He should have known better than to use such a thing as evidence.

I saw this last week and looked that one up too. Not only are the parallels bogus but the Egyptian book doesn't even tell stories about Horus. The parallels with he makes with Krishna and Mithra are also messed up. I don't think he is deliberately passing bad information, he just didn't care enough to do the research.

IMO he did a good job finding a wide sampling of the bizarre and idiotic in Christianity, Mormonism, Judaism, and Islam and mocking them. Some of his shots are fair, others are not. The movie works as entertainment but not as a logical sustained argument.

Yeah which opens him up to legitimate accusations of hypocrisy.

I do remember learning about some parallels in a Theology class I took once but the black and white comparison was overwhelmingly idiotic.

The movie works as entertainment but not as a logical sustained argument.
A movie like this mainly preaches to the choir.

His smarmy arrogant attitude really turns a lot of people off. I cannot stand his show most of the time. When he calms down and talks without arrogance he's very interesting. And if he wasn't so insulting I think he would do a better job reaching new people.

I've only seen the first half of Religulous on YouTube, but I found it a bit hit-and-miss. There were points I felt Maher could have made better, but didn't.

It pays to remember that Bill Maher is first and foremost a stand-up comic and talk show host. Of course, we live in an age when comedians are almost regarded as legitimate political and social commentators (and I blame the likes of Bill "I Don't Understand Gravity" O'Reilly for that as much as the Jon Stewarts and Steven Colberts) but anything Maher says is for entertainment first and serious consideration second. Educating folk on religion probably wasn't as big a motivation for the film as entertaining the audience and making money.

Of course, since I tend to agree with a lot of what he says (especially when he's talking religion) and I find his material funny most of the time, I'm happy to let him get away with it.
