Last Movie You Saw
« on: November 23, 2008, 01:54:06 PM »

It struck me we have this in Other Authors but not here...

Alas, the last two films I saw were not horror films (although that would depend a bit on your definition)...

21 - The movie about college kids counting cards.  Really great idea, based on a true story, but the execution was so dumbed-down (and Spacey-ized) I just didn't like it.  It was the Hannah Montana version of Ocean's Eleven.

Don't Mess With The Zohan - Sad thing is, I really liked about 70% of this movie.  But there was a sizeable chunk that was just so bad.  It was all the usual Adam Sandler stupid jokes and sight gags, and for me they crippled a lot of the great stuff around them.  It wasn't an awful movie, it's just sad because it could've easily been a great one.

Next?

Tropic Thunder - FINALLY!

I LOVED this movie! The "trailers" at the beginning were only the start of keeping me laughing my butt off for the entire movie!!!!!

I definitely want this DVD on my Christmas list!

Before that, I took my family to see Plan 9 at the local theater - it was one of only 3 remaining original copies, and it was awesome! My son really liked it (hated it?) both!!!! You know what I mean.

The Promotion - filmed in Chicago.  It was a subtle, smart little comedy that wasn't afraid to show the warts and polish of the protagonist and antagonist.

Wall E - yes, it's the SAME formula of every other Pixar film.  Hero lives neurotic lifestyle until the rug's pulled out of him and he sees a whole huge world (universe).  But it's a formula that COOKS because they yank you into loving the characters and caring about them, even incidental characters who show up.  There's just so much packed into everything, these remarkable layers of depth and the way that they incite such emotion for even a cockroach...  Pixar's best love story to date, and I have to admit, they've been very good at creating non-boring, interesting love themes throughout their flicks.

Just sat down and watched The Devil's Backbone after work (finally).  Not as good as Cronos or Pan's Labyrinth, but still pretty damned good   I also picked up Tales From the Darkside for super-cheap yesterday and popped that in.

Lesssee.....

Kung Fu Panda I liked it a lot even though admittedly I didn't think I would.

The Giant Spider Invasion (not in it's entirety)  1975 movie about well, I think the title really says it all stars Alan Hale (The Skipper) as a Sheriff and when we first see him sitting at his desk in his office, a guy walks in and he says to the guy "What's happening little buddy?"  I about died.  ( I have a hobby of watching bad movies, think MST3K)

Saving Private Ryan (had already seen) I cannot get enough about WWII, this movie is amazing.

Now, I have a question, all you zombie lovers out there, how many have seen Zombie Lake?

It is how do I say, beyond description.

Australia.  It's big.  A true, classic epic, not just epic in the sense of "most kick-ass fight scene EVER!!"  It's got a huge story and sprawling cinematography, absolutely made to be seen on the big screen.

I also think some critics are going to whine about it, because like most of the classic epic films it can't be summed up in a sentence or two, or have an easy genre label slapped on it.

It's a historical-western-romance-family-action-war story, with a touch of comedy... ;)

So, you've seen it then. Although I could have sworn it was a joint venture between  the French and Spain, not Australia.

Hmmmm... I don't rightly know, Sheriff.  I talked to two of the writers for an article, and based off that and my own research it actually seemed to be a very solid all-Australian production.  As memory serves, the production name at the top is even "Australian Film Co" or something like that (cute little clockwork logo).

...or was this a joke that just went completely over my head...?

Oh, and just got back from...

Coraline.  Fun.  The crowd that loves that puppety-animation stuff will eat it up, and the 3-D is pretty impressive.  A bit darker than Corpse Bride  or Nightmare Before Christmas, though.  The publicist was very happy they sneaked in with a PG and not a PG-13 (despite some ample bouncing exposed bosoms...).

Saw Bolt and Twilight over the weekend.

Loved Bolt. I heard before seeing it that it was better than the Incredibles from a critic on NPR. I didn’t think it was better as far as story but the animation was quite incredible. A lot of good laughs and a few aaawwwws as in oh my god the cat is teaching him how to do the cute puppy look.

Twilight was ok, what I mean is that if you did not read the book you might like the film or hate it, and if you read the book you might like the film, or if you read the book and your a completely insane fan girl or boy for it, then you will probably love the film and go see it two or three times before the weekend is over.
As almost always is the case, I liked the book and thought the film was only ok.
