Hm, I met Mark Rogers at AMA. That is where I got his book too XD

Anywho, I personally thought it was ok, but not the greatest. Not the biggest fan of demon/or talking zombies.

Yeah, this review is really stupid.  I’m not going to give any reason for my opinion, just that it almost plagiarizes all the other stupid reviews out there.

You know, I read this article by renowned literary critic Harold Bloom in which he attacks Stephen King and J.K. Rowling. His basic premise is that both are idiots, and his only significant evidence is that, in one book, Rowling repeats the phrase, “He stretched his legs,” whenever a character goes for a walk. Sure, I’m biased because I like King and Rowling, but I’m open to criticism against their work--as long as it is factual and not just a tirade.  Bloom gave no persuasive evidence to prove his case that, indeed, King and Rowling are ineffectual writers.  He sure as hell didn’t convince me.

And this review of The Dead, a review that criticizes solely the title of the book . . . well, that’s a disservice to the writer and the readers.  That one star out of five means nothing because the review lacks any proof to justify the rating.  It rings like that Harold Bloom article: empty and completely dismissible.

I can't defend Professor Bloom's attack on King and Rowling, because you're pretty much right about his lack of evidentiary arguments...but I'd be real hesitant to sweep the man under the rug.  I love his work (especially THE WESTERN CANON, an indispensable guide to the great works of our culture) and I'd argue that he's one of our great critics, just as important as an Edmund Wilson or a Cynthia Ozick.

I'm not the biggest Rowling fan in the world, but I have no problem with her success or her audience; she's getting people to read, which is a monumental achievement in this illiterate age (in which even educated people read, on average, one book a year).  As for King - well, he's kind of our Dickens or Twain.  He's not the best writer in the world, but he's a master craftsman and a stunning storyteller.

As to anyone who would review a book based on its title alone - yes, that's monumentally stupid.

I would love to see The Dead get made into a movie. I doubt it will ever happen though.

Good point.  Whenever I go into this rant, I always mean to note Harold Bloom's astounding contributions to literary criticism.  It just upsets me that a brilliant man can write such a brilliantly inane article.  And it was his attack that really bothered me.  He wasn’t just pointing out flaws in the writing; he actually went to the lengths of saying something like, “Rowling’s mind is so governed by dead clichés, she couldn’t produce an original thought if she tried.”  And he called King “an immensely inadequate writer, sentence by sentence, line by line.”  Those aren’t direct quotes, but they’re damn close.  And the illustration of King that accompanied the article--well, it was kind of funny, but . . . it portrayed him as an ape.  I don’t know.  It just seems like, as articulate as Bloom has been in the past, he could have come up with a better case.

That said, I agree we shouldn't completely dismiss his work.  Just that one article.  And, of course, useless reviews like this one for The Dead.

As for King - well, he's kind of our Dickens or Twain

Funny you should say that.  I came across the Bloom article while researching for a paper in which I compare King to Dickens!

Reviews should say something constructive.  Dissing a title of a book just says "Hey Im a fuckwit!" it doesn't do anything for anyone.

I know the first post I made here was a review - and while like anyone who pours their heart and soul into writing something the last thing I want is negative feedback.  So I focused on pointing out the things that I thought needed improving and mentioning the things that did work.

Its a review that could make the writer of a story throw their toys out of the cot, but I hope its one that they can take in the way its intended.  As an opinion of one reader.

I agree, there is no point in knocking someone for repeatition of sentences because if that was the case most reviewers should be writing critics on themselves for being idiots!

We have a few like that in Australian papers, that you just wonder what the hell they're doing in that kind of job.  When I worked on a free press magazine, I did a few reviews and I got to go see movies at the distributor's cinemas, and I was disgusted that the so called professional critics use to act like overgrown kids who couldn't shut up and watch the actual movie.  Or complain about the fact that there was no freebies (candy, etc).  Reviewers need to be very careful as they fall in the trap of routine.

How absurd is it to accuse a book of being "almost plagiarized" because it shares a title with some other works?
Jacob

on another note:

Under the United States trademark law, titles of single works generally cannot be registered as trademarks but titles used in a series may be capable of registration if the marks otherwise qualify.
