It's a sci fi story, I have searched everywhere and all I remember reading is the 1000 wd version. I want to say it's Arthur Clarke, but it may not be. The story is kind of like this:

This crew is in space on a new shuttle and they are getting near this huge asteroid belt that they are going to examine. When they get close enough they find that they giant space rocks aren't asteroids at all, but GIANT people. Like titans, kind of, that are floating around in space with mocking, screaming, faces. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS STORY! WHO WROTE IT?

Any help would be awesome.

Yeah, it's a cool story, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I remember reading it during one of my college courses. Blah!

I have sort of the same problem, Blue. Long ago when I was about 5 or 6 I saw a few black and white movies with an actress that I believe to be Loretta Young. God, was she beautiful. Anyway, along the course of the movie, which usually took place in a huge gothic style mansion, a turtle would show up with a lit candle on its back.

I can't find anything like that. I even went as far as contacting TCM and AMC and they couldn't pinpoint them either. I don't remember who the male character was, but then again I'm only guessing that it was Ms Young as the actress.

I've read a lot of Clarke, and that doesn't strike any bells.  I immediately thought of James P Hogan, who sometimes writes stuff like that.  Possibly even Jerry Pournelle.

Sorry, can't help any better than that.

And, I'm sorry, a turtle with a candle on its' back?  That sounds trippy.

Maybe somemore info if you have any Pat and i'll ask around and look around the library here.
Sorry Zak, was neither of those authors :(

Thank you, Blue. I hope I can find out what they are. I've tried to find something on your problem, too.

I'm searching through his stuff now... but not finding it...

When I read the story, the original was around... oh, like 3500 wds ( I think ) and in my creative writing course, it was cut down to 1000wds to prove that stories can be shortened and still retain thier message.

I found this one. "A Night to Remember" and it was Loretta Young

No luck on the SF story

Wow, that's a blast from the past.  Well, from a few years ago, at least.

I found mine finally:

The turtle and candle scene is in a basement apartment from the movie "A Night to Remember" (1942 or '43) starring Loretta Young and Brian Aherne. It is a mystery comedy. A woman rents a gloomy basement apartment in Greenwich Village.

I still can't find anything about the asteroid people. I guess it just boils down to plugging in the right search terms.
