Roses of Blood as a Video Game?
« on: February 22, 2007, 04:59:18 PM »

In a different thread, Stephen Blundell wrote

Quote
I'd love to see some of my work in games, I'd especially love to see "Roses" turned into a rpg ... which would be very very cool!  (There you go David ... another option for you ... everyone knows the game industry makes more than films! Sometimes?!  Maybe Philip can help you out!)

I, too, would love to see Roses of Blood as a video game, but where do I start? Any thoughts or suggestions?

First thing you do is send it to Capcom. They're the ONLY people who know how to make zombie games well . . . At least in my opinion. Resident Evil was kickass (and still is) so I guess they would be the place to send it to. I dunno what else . . .

Maybe go to their website and email a person? www.capcom.com .

I dunno other than that. Hope that can kind of help.

Capcom recently decided to actually make two games that they were going to pass on initially :

Lost Planet and
Dead Rising (One of the best zombie games ever made).

Both games have won awards and sold well. So Capcom knows for a fact that zombie oriented games do sell well and Dead Rising is still hot atm. If you pitch Roses of Blood to them, now would be a good time.

Make sure your pitch has all kinds of concept art and a full copy of the book with it  ;)

I could actually see Roses of Blood as a combination of Lost Planet and Dead Rising, which rocks.

If you can't place it with a professional game company you might get a group of mod makers together to make a Half-Life 2 (or other game) modification based on the book.  It would be great promotion!

Hmmm, that would be interesting.  Any idea how to contact mod makers?

There are forums all over the net where people looking to recruit others to work on game projects can meet up.

Here is one : http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/forum.asp?forum_id=8

You can post your info on your project - include some pics to wet their taste buds, and tell them what you are looking for talentwise and people may e-mail you. Then you put together your team and get to work on your Mod.

I worked on a mod project for the game Max Payne many years back. It was very fun, but very time consuming and hard. Even if the mod doesn't come to be, you still end up with some cool art/3-D models of your characters which is nice for portfolio purposes.

If I had more time I'd work on a mod for it.  I suck at the graphical stuff, but I'm sure I could figure out the programming/scripting stuff.  Anybody want to sell me a few of their hours out of each day?  :)

I'd go for a Half-Life 2 mod if I were you.  Who knows, you might hit the jackpot and end up having it distributed on Steam (Valve's game distribution system).  That would be a huge chunk of publicity.

I don’t know much about video game rights.  If I had a mod made, would that keep me from selling the book as a full-length game?

I don't think so.  If the mod is good, it could end up being the full-length game.  Lots of times game publishers will pick up mods that are very well done, improve/lengthen them, and release them.

Do you know of any popular mods--more importantly, do you know who made them???  That might be a good place to start (that, and the message boards Creepsville mentioned).

Day of Defeat - one of the most LOVED WW2 shooters around.
Counterstrike - huge enough that they sold it on shelves with an all new single-player edition.
They Hunger - the first time I played that Half-Life mod, I hit control-alt-delete after my first encounter with the hungry dead.  And that was ten minutes into the game.  With old generation graphics.

Also, the Half Life engine allows you to do EXCELLENT storytelling, not just run and gun and key collecting.

Why would Roses of Blood have to be a video game? I'm just curious. I think it could be just as much fun if it were a RPG along the lines of Vampire (old) and D&D.
I mean just think. A RPG world where you can design characters from templates and fight undead, living, whatever.

Just my 100 cents :)

That's a great idea! I wonder if I could do both an RPG and a video game... I'd have to study the rights.  BluesasJim, do you know anyone to contact about making an RPG?

No one direct. Sorry. But I could help you do some of the research if you like. Of course, you would have to pitch the idea to the company you choose ;) That is unless you design and make the game yourself (Or with the help of all these great people on this board) and perhaps Jacob could give you a good publisher to go through. I mean, an RPG (although a game) is still a book, right?  With your talents in writing, shouldn't be a prob.

And I don't see why you couldn't do both either.

A roleplaying game published would also give Stephen more chances to draw excellent pictures for the books, like a full two-page spread.

I know Eden Games does All Flesh Must Be Eaten, a nicely done open-system designed around zombie madness.
