My DARK KNIGHT review on RevolutionSF.com
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:14:04 AM »

RevolutionSF.com has posted my review of THE DARK KNIGHT as their feature article as of July 21.  Be warned-- in addition to spoilers, it is not entirely positive.  In fact, you might say it's a (GASP!) NEGATIVE review!!!!!!

I really liked the movie, though I agree, it's not the Batman we know.  And your comments about the Joker doing more with less are very well taken.  At least the gadgets are on a believable James Bond level and not completely absurd.  And (in a movie) the gadgets help with suspension of disbelief.  In comics you can get away with an unarmed man beating up half a dozen goons because of his bare-knuckle skills.  In a movie it's painfully obvious that the best fighter would be shot down without some sort of extra edge.  Still, for a third movie it would be interesting to see someone cut the Batman off from his resources.

As for the theme of alienation and the outlaw hero... no, it's not traditional Batman territory but this isn't a traditional Batman movie.  If you tried to feed this version back into the comics it would probably fail, miserably. But, within this context, I thought it worked well.

I'll look forward to your script for Iron Man vs. the Joker. ;D  I love mixing and matching characters and this would be as much fun as Hamlet vs. Iago.

Mathew, have you ever read Frank Miller's stint with Batman called DK (and subsequently DK2)?  It's darker than this movie.

Van, good review.  Points are well made.  I disagree with the gadgets bit, but I'm totally willing to overlook it....(hehehehe)  Oh, and I'll happily also say that all the gadget stuff is just as much about marketing as it is about showing "slick, super cool, Bondesqueness, blah blah blah."

I do, however agree on a different point.  I would have liked to have seen more martial arts oriented action (not just the two, three, whatever scenes that did get presented), but I was content with viewing this flick as more of a "developmental" character build thingie.

And, yes, it would be hard to see Bale as Batman out staring Superman (unless they got that youngster who did the last Superman movie).

Point taken with the Spidey/X-men plot/story contamination.

PS: I like gadgets as much as I like martial arts....so......
