Boy, I feel ignorant. I don't recognize any of these guys! (I am not so well read in certain areas of fiction)

most of the reads that i've grown to love were a complete accident. i started reading Robert B. Parker when it was the only book on the sub's library shelf left, and then i realized where i knew Spenser and Hawk from...the TV show, Spenser, for Hire! "holy crap," i said to myself, then devoured the entire catalog.

Jim Butcher writes the Dresden files novels (Spenser meets Merlin), Joe Lansdale wrote Bubba Ho-Tep, John Steakley wrote Vampire$ (which is eighty billion times better than the John Carpenter movie), Murphy and Sapir started the Destroyer series (on which there was a movie based, Remo Williams, the Adventure Begins) which i also stumbled upon, because i started reading the series on #100 after recognizing Remo Williams and Chuin's names on the book cover from that movie.

it's mostly accidental, and i love it.

Sure; well kinda anyways.  I just don't read nearly as much as I did when I was a wee lad.  Insufficient time, not enough brain space.  That's why I had to become a zombie - removable / scalable brain space.  When one fills up, just get another one!  Bingo bango bammo!

Everybody's welcome on the zombie boat!

Hmm, some of mine.

Christopher Rice
Stephen King
Tristan Egolf (who, sadly, will not be writing any more books. R.I.P Mr. Egolf.)
Cormac McCarthy

I can't think of a whole lot I read on a regular person. I've only read one of Egolf's and McCarthy's books, so... Yeah.

Thanks for enlightening me! Turns out I have seen most of the movies or TV versions of the written stuff...and isn't the guy who directed Bubba Ho-Tep slated to direct another Permuted book, John Dies at the End? Good stuff!

Three of my favorite authors are, sadly, not with us anymore:  Richard Laymon, Mike McQuay (who wrote the brilliant novel Memories and the equally brilliant novelization of Escape from New York), and Ken Grimwood (who wrote one of my favorite books ever, Replay).

Other favorites:
Guy Gavriel Kay (if you haven't read Tigana, you're no fan of epic fantasy :D)
George RR Martin
Edward Lee
Jack Ketchum
S. Andrew Swann/Steven Swiniarski
SM Stirling
Robert McCammon
Robert Charles Wilson
Dan Simmons
Nancy Kress
John Skipp & Craig Spector
Simon R. Green
Ken Follett
Kim Newman
Richard Morgan
Stephen Donaldson
C.S. Friedman
Glen Cook
Brian Stableford
Philip Jose Farmer
Ray Garton
Poul Anderson
James Herbert
Mike Resnick

Concurrence on Ahern, Vachss, Kirkman, Pelecanos (I love the Wire with all my heart) and Vonnegut.

Also, the Gar Wilson you truly love is a gentleman named William Fieldhouse, a true genius of the genre.

I also met the other great Wilson was Michael Linnaker, who I met personally and spoke at length with while we toured the Loop around the Chicago river. (He did some of the later Phoenix Force novels.)

Also, your favored Dick Stivers went by the ghost name G.H. Frost, but his true name was Robert Lyle Payne.
