"God" or "gods" - I don't make a distinction in this context.

But I do think beauty (as opposed to, say, moral rules or logic or anything else that's been suggested) is a surer sign of the existence of something higher or transcendent.

I agree that it is a *better* or *more positive* argument for the existance of something transcendent, but not necessarily any *more convincing* an argument...

Evolution and surivival strike me as more basic, carnal reasons for 'beauty' eg: a bee helping in the pollination process of flowers...

... but we're going to bore the good folks of PERMUTED with our ongoing debate, Kim!  :puppet:

If we have to put up with each other, I see no reason why the rest of them shouldn't have to as well

See, I'm questioning the whole idea of "convincing." Not logically more convincing, surely. MAybe "satisfying" is a better word.

And I don't think you'll get as far with evolutionary arguments when trying to explain beauty as you would get with trying to explain morality, for example. If it's just sexual selection and survival, lots of ugly things would work just as well as pretty things. And lots of pretty things (sunsets, canyons, mountains, etc.) have nothing to do reproduction. Some, like the ocean or mountains, might even lure one to his/her doom. (One could make a similar observation for lots of the people we find sexually attractive - they might be very dangerous, which is part of the attraction)

You've obviously been to Belfast, Kim...

That's true - the pronouncement of 'beauty', in that sense, is an expression of satisfaction with one's environment.

In a sense, you could argue that 'satisfaction' back to survival. The ecosystem, in general, requires every organism to do its part. Every organism must want to remain within the ecosystem to do its part...

... but, hell, I'm no scientist. I'll not pretend I am.  :pirate:

Ah, but nature ain't always 'safe' eg: the Preying Mantis or the creatures in DROP DEAD GORGEOUS  ;)

As usual, we've argued to a position of more-or-less agreement

And Dr Pus, I thought of you when I saw the cover, as I thought you'd like that version of her

Eh?

In a way - perhaps. In a more fundamental way - not at all! But I'll jack your thread no more, Doc.

Let's get back to talking about the cover art - I'd love to know what has inspired both the cover and the name of the book?

The cover is the first time one of my covers has actually been a visual from the story, as opposed to some image that "fits" the tone/theme of the story. It's also reminiscent of the original Friday the 13th movie poster (not because I like the movie especially, but because I thought it was a striking visual and a clean, simple design).

The title brings up some of the issues of crime, punishment, and responsibility that define the conflict and resolution of the plot in the last third of the book.

I think the title fits it to a "T".

The cover definitely has a visceral grab you and say: "Hi!" kind of feel to it.  It's very fetching, and it totally captures the same hook that the first Friday the 13th advert art hit with.  It also makes me hungry, but that's just the way that I roll.

Good luck with it, brutha!
