Submission call: CROSS-GENRE CTHULHU
« on: February 06, 2007, 06:10:36 PM »

Update (2/12/2008): John Sunseri has taken care of his personal issues and is back on board to finish out both volumes of Cross-Genre Cthulhu!  I have a final list of stories John has selected for both books and he will be working on sending out acceptances/rejections.  Watch for a TOC for both books coming as soon as he's received confirmation from the accepted authors.  Questions should be directed to mythosbook@yahoo.com.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: CROSS-GENRE CTHULHU

Following are the submission guidelines for CROSS-GENRE CTHULHU (temporary title), an anthology of unique Lovecraftian/Cthulhu mythos tales. CROSS-GENRE CTHULHU will be edited by John Sunseri and published in trade paperback by Permuted Press.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Cross-Genre Cthulhu will be an anthology taking Lovecraft's Mythos--the tomes, the cults, the creatures, the gods - and blending it with other well-defined genres. We want to take the musty hermetic world of HPL and drag it out into the sunlight of Dodge City, the mean streets of Los Angeles, the bright, shiny cyberfuture of Mars Base One. Love superhero stories? Then pit your Captain Laser against the Mi-go in a battle to the death! A fan of romance? Have your heroine fall in love with a shoggoth! Tired of mercenaries going up against the Mafia? Give them a bigger opponent and have them try to stop Cthulhu from destroying Miami Beach!

We're looking for fun, fast pulpy tales with an HPL flavor. We DON'T want straight pastiche - we've seen enough stories in which the bookish protagonist finds a blasphemous tome, calls up some shambling monstrosity from beyond space and time, and gets eaten. By all means keep the shambling monstrosity - we love shambling monstrosities - but have a hardboiled Sam Spade type tracking it down. Have your Tombstone sheriff trying to protect his town from the Children of Yig. Throw your Space Marines up against the Fungi from Yuggoth in a skirmish in the asteroid belt. Have the Hounds of Tindalos hunting someone through the magical land of Faery. Show us what a self-help book would look like as written by Abdul Alhazred--pick whatever genre you want and mix in a generous helping of Lovecraft's Mythos.

New tales are preferred, reprints will be considered.

HOW MUCH ARE YOU PAYING?

$25.00 US dollars ($15.00 USD for reprints) upon publication plus 1 copy of the printed trade paperback. Payment will be made via Paypal.

WHAT RIGHTS DO YOU WANT?

First print rights, exclusive print rights for two years from time of publication. Author retains copyright.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY STORY BE?

3,000-8,000 words.

HOW DO I SUBMIT?

Send the file as an attachment (.DOC or .RTF, please no PDF, HTML, etc.) to mythos@permutedpress.com. Stories should be double-spaced and use Times New Roman 12 pt. font with italics for emphasis (no underlining). Do not copy-paste your story into an email. Contact information and word count at the top of the document’s first page.

Include a brief bio, story publication history, and any other relevant information in the body of the email.

WHAT'S THE DEADLINE?

We will begin reading immediately and stories will be accepted until August 15, 2007 or until the anthology is filled.

WHAT’S THE READING TIME?

Stories we like may be held until submissions close. Rejections will generally be sent within 4-6 weeks.

HOW DO I KNOW YOU’VE RECEIVED MY SUBMISSION?

Within one (1) week of your submission, you'll receive an e-mail confirming that we received it. If you don't receive this confirmation, feel free to query.

ARE MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS OKAY?

No. Pick your best story and submit. If/when a story is rejected you may submit another story.

WHAT ABOUT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS?

Simultaneous submissions to other publications are fine but please inform us if your story is placed.

ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE ME A DETAILED RESPONSE IF YOU REJECT MY STORY?

Based on the expected volume of submissions it is highly unlikely that detailed constructive criticism will be given on rejected tales. If you followed the submission guidelines you will at least receive notice your story was rejected. If you did not follow submission guidelines your submission may simply be deleted.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITS ON VIOLENCE, GORE, AND LANGUAGE?

None as long as it fits the story.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITS ON SEXUAL/EROTIC CONTENT?

We aren’t interested in tales featuring graphic sexual/erotic content, nor are we interested in tales which focus heavily on sexual/erotic content as the primary plot of the story.

DO YOU NEED A COVER ARTIST?

We will need a cover artist. If you’re interested, send a few samples of your art (no large files, please) to mythos@permutedpress.com. Please include your rates.

DO YOU NEED INTERIOR ART?

We are considering a single black-and-white/grayscale image for each story. Pay for interior art will be a copy of the printed anthology. Email art samples (no large files, please) to mythos@permutedpress.com.

WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS THAT AREN'T COVERED IN THESE GUIDELINES?

Send an e-mail to mythos@permutedpress.com.

And, of course, I'll be available here on the board for general questions.

I knew you two were up to something, I just knew it! I think I'll try this . . . But I'll have to see if I can track down some of H.P Lovecraft's stuff in my school or public library and read it before I do so. I need to know what kind of strange, twisted stuff Lovecraft twisted up to get a better idea of what the anthology is apart . . . Ah well, I'll be doing that first thing in the morning. ^^

Thanks for the info, Jacob, John.

There's a pretty good overview of the mythos here.

Read 'The Call of Cthulhu', 'The Rats in the Walls', 'The Shadow over Innsmouth', 'The Dunwich Horror', 'The Colour Out of Space' and 'The Whisperer in Darkness'.  They're all pretty short, and they'll give you an idea of what ol' HPL was like.  If you have more time, hunt down 'At the Mountains of Madness' - it's a novella, and a very good one.  Also track down Robert Bloch's 'The Haunter in the Darkness' (I THINK that's what it's called).

Good luck, and happy reading!

Are you on a White Ship?  Remember, the bearded man warned, "turn back to the happy shore of Sona-Nyl; for Sona-Nyl is known of men, while none hath ever beheld Cathuria."

Yeah, but Cathuria is the abode of gods and the land of unnumbered cities of gold!

Nice pull, man.

These are some of my favorite Mythos tales, if submitters want to read what I consider to be some of the best Lovecraftian tales outside of Lovecraft:

"A Colder War" and "The Atrocity Archives" by Charles Stross
"Than Curse the Darkness" by David Drake
"Fat Face" by Michael Shea
"Black Man with a Horn" by TED Klien
"Long Meg and her Daughters" by Paul Finch
"Disconnected" and "One Way Conversation" by Brian M Sammons
"Hive" by Tim Curran
"Ache" by David Witteveen
"A Little Job in Arkham" and "Resurgence" by John Sunseri
"The Star Pools" by AA Attanasio
"The Second Wish" by Brian Lumley
"Crouch End" by Stephen King
"Shaft Number 247" by Basil Cooper
"The Hound of Tindalos" by Frank Belknap Long
"The Turret" by Richard A Lupoff
"The Barrens" By Paul F Wilson
"The Big Fish" by Kim Newman
"Yellow is the Colour of Tomorrow" by Ron Shiflet
"The Incident on Highway 19" by CJ Henderson
"Lost Stars" by Ann K Schwader
"The Black Stone" by Robert E Howard
"Feasters of the Dark" by William Jones

More evidence that John is Stephen King: they're both in Dave's list!  I think Dave knows...  :)

Thanks for the list, Dave.

Cool.  My editor shot down my Executioner vs. Cthulhu novel.

But to get it down under 8000 words...

What made you hate Cell? I was kinda disappointed a little, especially since I thought it was going to be true zombie book in a way, but it sort of had more to do with terrorism.

Dang, Doug, I just clicked your link and you've written a lot of books!  I think I read a few Executioner novels years and years ago, but it's been so long I don't really remember.  I should pick up one of yours.

I always think it's cool to have authors here.  I guess I'm still a fanboy at heart.  :)

And welcome to the board!
