Hello Mr. Dunwoody,

I just recieved my copy of The Undead Anthology and I was reading about the authors. I saw that you were a Texas native. I was just wondering, if it isn't prying too much, what part of the Lone Star State are you from?

I am just curious because I live near Beaumont in Southeast Texas.

Enjoy The Undead! ;) I was born in Bryan near A&M University, and my dad's side of the family all hail from Tyler. Because my dad was Air Force, I didn't live there very long growing up, but I definitely claim Texas as my place of origin & look forward to spending a lot more time there in the future.

Enjoy The Undead! ;)

I have another book to read before I start The Undead, but I couldn't help myself so I read the first couple of stories.  :-[. Great Stuff. So far my favorite was Hotline because the ending caught me by surprise. The couple of stories I have read so far are great. I am looking forward to reading Grinning Samuel when I get to it.

Texas is great, if you can get around the hot, humid summers we have in this part of it.

Grinning Samuel was great!

How did you ever get the idea to come up with such a unique zombie?

Glad you liked it. :) The idea came from a nightmare I had when I was a kid about a dead guy with metal hands. I've written a few stories trying to recreate that image, but none really seemed to work til Grinning Samuel. It also ties loosely into Empire (it's in the same universe anyway).

Hey Dave,

I'm just about to start reading your short story (I've been savouring it a little ... by reading a few chapters at a time).  So I look forward to reading it .... I am also looking forward to reading empire (just got to put down the pencils (well actually I don't use pencils much anymore ... just black fine points).

And your ***** zombie has got my good (not stumped .... if you thought the first sketch was good .... should see the second image, imagine entrails and guts and ooze covering the d.s. (not giving away anything) while still showing the zombie .... ahhhhhhhh

I'm sure I will enjoy "Empire" David ... I really enjoyed your Undead 2 story, it was really refreshing.  I ended up with seven pages of sketches for it (Like the one you've seen), along with four pencilled pages.  I've inked 2/3rds of one, which I decided to do in a dot shaded effect (which took roughly six hours to do... and a world of hurt on the hands) but its totally worth it.  I've sent Jacob it to have a look, as I am like a kid in a candy shop.

Might have to do some illustrations for Empire when I get some free time up my sleeve.

I think the story you've read is different from the one that'll appear in Undead 2, but I love the sketches I've seen. If you do decide to draw some Empire stuff that'd be awesome. It's been a great privilege to have artists show how they visualize what I write.

No, you read the latest version.  You're just really fast so Dave probably thought you'd read an older version.  :)

Dave, I have a question.  We, the editors of The Undead II, have requested several changes to your submissions, “Brownlee’s Flame” and “The Dragon and the Abbot.” What was it like trying to incorporate our suggestions? Also, do you feel that your stories have improved with each draft? Should more presses offer in-depth feedback as we have for The Undead II?  What, from your experience, are the advantages/disadvantages?
