fine, fine albums
« on: November 14, 2007, 05:28:29 PM »

two come to mind immediately. one because i'm listening to it as i type this, and the other because it's such a goddamn inspiration to me. the two albums are:

Corrosion of Conformity - America's Volume Dealer
Pink Floyd - Animals

AVD was a commercial flop for Corrosion of Conformity, but when i compare it to all the other albums, it just stomps all over them and never stops. i can listen to this thing all day for days on end and never get tired of it. a couple of songs are really very poignant, and here i'll give them to you for recommended listening:

13 Angels
Stare Too Long
Take What You Want

Animals has gone quarduple platinum, but if you ask a casual Pink Floyd fan, they've maybe heard of it. a lot of people who say they like the Floyd list The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, and less often Wish You Were Here. even some of the band members aren't really high on it (Dave Gilmour and Rick Wright) and sandwiched as it is between the above-mentioned albums, it might be easy to overlook. but i'm here to tell you, it's 42 minutes of GOLD. this is the album that really put it into my head that i wanted to try and write a concept album (the results of that experiment are HERE, all comments on this are welcome and encouraged) and it's still something that i might want to do a cover of someday.

i can't list the songs to listen to off this one...it's only five songs, and you should listen to them all. today. GO!!!

I don't own a lot of music CDs, but one of my favorite is 'Confessions' by Madonna. It's got a lot of my favorite songs (Sorry, Like It or Not, How High, Forbidden love.) Like that. : )

Crack the Sky - "Live Sky".

Any Rory Gallagher album.

Rush- "2112" The A-side.

Any Cranberries album.

PiL - "Metal Box"

Daniel Johnston - "Artistic Vice" (It is a great album, but I have an affinity for it since I played bass on the album.)

XTC - "English Settlement", "Black Sea", "Drums and Wires"

And a plethora more to come .....

What the heck, I'll throw my 2 cents in on this one, just to start an argument with Thom.

The five greatest guitar albums of all time are (in no particular order):

Deep Purple -- Machine Head
Jeff Beck -- Blow by Blow
Led Zeppelin -- Physical Graffiti
Yngwie J. Malmsteen -- Odyssey
Ted Nugent -- Free for All

The above were selected not solely for technical prowess--although there's scads of that--but also for listenability.  Every one of these can be listened to front-to-back, without one's finger itching for the "next" button on the CD player.

(And if you doubt me on the Nugent--there are plenty of Ted-haters out there--listen to the construction of the solo on "Together," and how tightly the guitar pairs with the soaring vocals of a young, pre-Bat Out of Hell Meat Loaf.  The Nuge invented the power ballad before it had a name.)

ExTxAx - No Faith
Circle Jerks - Group Sex
Black Sabbath - pretty much all of it
Pj Harvey - most of it
The Dwarves - Sugar Fix
Antaeus - Cut Yourself and Worship Satan
Hole - old random 45s and most of Live Through This
Lady Gaga - pretty much all of it.
Lil Wayne - pretty much all of it
Krieg - The Black house.... or all of it works too.
Coffinworm - When All Became None
And agreed on pretty much all of Metallica before Load.  I don't really care for the Black album but that's ok.

I can probably do this for days so I'm gonna go ahead and stop now.

Mizuno Soccer Shoes! Truly amazing loobaron bottomball boots

I'd completely forgotten that album, it really was a remarkable work and very much ahead of its time.  More evolved and complex than Jeff Beck's simplistic "Led Boots" from a few years later.  Definitely a kick.
