Oh, I agree with the points you've made as well! I've lived all over the nation, and also much of my family consists of hillbillies. (j/k...perhaps not!) I've lived in the country and in the city, so I know what you are saying from my own personal experiences. And I think that is a good point to bring up. Some people form their opinions about this subject based off from hearsay, and not necessarily personal interactions with others outside of their socio-economic class, or education, etc, etc...That's why I say its not always a black and white issue. (Pardon the pun, I'm definitely not referring to race in this instance!) There's always going to be good and bad points in a discussion about this topic. And I think no one person can be entirely right or wrong. I think as long as people are willing to be open minded, and try to see things from another's perspective it makes it a whole lot easier to learn something new as well as come to peaceful conclusions, even if you end up not entirely agreeing with each other. And that's an ok thing!

A bit late to talk of this further, I guess, but I've been reading a bit, lately, about LIBERTARIAN policies - particularly with reference to the UK Libertarian Party.

To be honest, I'm starting to agree with their free-market anarchy - removing legislation to make the government less of a hold on us and, instead, more responsible to us.

It's still new to me but I'm keen to read more - I'd like to pick up a book that would, perhaps, concentrate further on this relationship between libertarian ideas and their roots in principles of anarchy - any suggestions, Bowie/ anyone?

From my own country's perspective, I'm seeing less of a point to voting for, electing, paying ridiculous amounts of salary to and trusting in power idiots like Northern Ireland's current chair of the Health Committee - a woman called Iris Robinson (wife of our equally idiotic First Minister) who spoke publicly about how gay people and child abusers are equally repulsive to both her and her narrow-minded sky-god. Not only that, but Iris reckons a good friend of hers - a christian psychologist - can 'cure' gay folks and help them see the light.

What a prick.  :ninja:

Why do we vote these idiots in? Why do they have any say in our lives? I know it seems like an infantile rant - but, really... think about it, for a second. WHY do we elect stupide, useless people like this?!

I'm starting to see democracy as the enemy of the minority - the vehicle of the herd mentality, and I'm thinking we need to look at alternatives - Linbertarian principles seem to offer an alternative that I think, on the face of it, could be workable.

Any thoughts/ suggestions/ experience on this matter would be very useful to me.

OK, I am by no means a perfect Christian here, but I have to say something. After reading some of DDHH's posts, I feel like he is stating that believing in God makes me an idiot who believes in fairy tales? He definitely has a right to his opinion, as does everyone in the great big world. My belief is that just because I believe in one thing and you believe in another, doesn't make you any dumber than me and vice versa. Also, a true Christian who has that faith that everyone laughs about, knows that people are supposed to hate WHAT is wrong, not WHO is wrong. I have said this before..."Don't just pretend that you love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong." Romans 12:9.
I am a Christian and I make no bones about my faith. Yet I also have lots of really good friends (not to mention family) who are gay, gamblers, alcoholics, drug addicts, etc...but guess what, I love them even more because they need it more, being as that they are the ones who are socially looked down upon.
My political views....people think I am narrow minded if I don't support the democratic nomination. Well, I don't support the Republican or Independent either! All politicians are crooked, and there is no one that I support enough to vote for. Everyone one of them lies and says whatever it takes to get into office, then immediately go about not keeping their promises. I don't claim to be a big politics major or anything like that, I just know that I am not voting this year because I can't go into the booth and select someone without leaving knowing that I lied. They all scare me. There never has been and never will be anyone in the White House who deserves to be there, and Americans will continue to suffer for that as long as there is a USA.
I apologize if I offend anyone....but Mama had to put in her two cents here!  ;D

Mama, I've learned to tune out the atheists who make such assertions.

Every religion, and I classify atheism as a religion as it's a proof-less belief system with no real foundation other than "someone said this," has these folks that, in the real world, would be called pushy assholes.

In religion, they tend to be called evangelists.

Either way, if someone calls you an idiot for your belief system, they are entitled to their beliefs, but they're pushy idiots themselves for making their value judgments.

America was founded by people who wanted to be free from religious persecution.  That some tried to enforce their religious beliefs is not in question, but the Constitution is our freedom to tell those pushy, moronic maniacs to shut the hell up and let us live our lives if we're not sacrificing children on stone altars.

And I usually say the same "shut the hell up" to Christians who label all atheists as ignorant and damned, especially since only the teachings of one Johnny come-lately chowderhead has colored their perceptions that everyone who doesn't believe in Jesus is consigned to the fiery pits of hell.

'sides, once you ignore DDHH's "ur fukkin stoopid if you are theist" stuff, it's only a small part of his presence here, and he's otherwise one of the bright shining points of this board.

No one anywhere is perfect.  I have a grouchy temper and the occasional willingness to go overboard in my angry words, and I have a few taboos that would make most of you want to vomit and string me up from a tall tree by the neck.

We're a happy family, even with differences over politics and religion, mainly because we dump that stuff at the door when it's time to celebrate zombies nommin' brainz.

This is very true.  We need more nommin' of brainz.  This is a political platform that I can wholly support and endorse.  The first candidate that puts it out there, I'm joining their party.

I don't think you are an 'idiot' - I don't know you, DM. From what I've read of your posts, you seem pretty cool to me.

I do think, however, that belief in a god (and in particular the judeo/xian/ islamic god) defies logic...

... but let's not get into that. My post wasn't meant to lead me into *yet another* debate on religion. It was a commentary on politics - and Irish politics, at that.

*feels self being dragged into it*  :-\

Iris Robinson is a fundamentalist xian. Her narrow-minded, ill-educated views *are* a result of her faith - that's *her* opinion (as well as mine):

(from wikipedia)

In June 2008, shortly after a homophobic attack on a gay man in the province, she [Robinson] made comments on the BBC Radio Ulster's Stephen Nolan Show offering to recommend homosexuals to psychiatric counselling.[8] While condemning the attack,[9] she said during the broadcast:

“ "I have a very lovely psychiatrist who works with me in my offices and his Christian background is that he tries to help homosexuals - trying to turn away from what they are engaged in". ”

She went on to say "I'm happy to put any homosexual in touch with this gentleman and I have met people who have turned around and become heterosexuals." Mrs Robinson claimed that homosexuality was an "abomination" and it made her feel "sick" and "nauseous". In a subsequent interview following criticism of her comments, Mrs Robinson defended her views and denied prejudice against homosexuals, saying that "just as a murderer can be redeemed by the blood of Christ, so can a homosexual.... If anyone takes issue, they're taking issue with the word of God."[10]

Her claims were rebuffed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, David McCartney from the Rainbow Project, Sinn Féin's Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane[11] and Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) representatives including Equality Spokesperson, Dolores Kelly.[12][13] The psychiatrist in question, Dr Paul Miller, later resigned from his post of 'adviser' to Mrs Robinson, and temporarily stood down from his post of Consultant pyschiatrist at Belfast's Mater hospital.[14]

She is now also under a police hate crime investigation for those comments as over one hundred[15] separate complaints have been made against her, including those by Andrew Muir, the vice chair of Gay and Lesbian across Down,[16] who is a member of the South Belfast District Policing Partnership,[17] and by gay rights activist Robert Toner who believes his human rights were violated and complained to the Equality Commission. According to the Coalition on Sexual Orientation (CoSo), a gay advocacy group in Northern Ireland, the figure of over one hundred complaints was provided to them by the police. Some of the complaints were made in person by members of the public visiting a local police station, and some were made via the PSNI website.[15][18] Mrs Robinson again repeated her viewpoint in the Northern Ireland Assembly on 30 June 2008 when questioned by Health Minister Michael McGimpsey[19][20] in a discussion about "LGBT Groups: Mental-Health Needs".

On 17 June 2008, speaking in a Northern Ireland Grand Committee session on Risk Assessment and Management of Sex Offenders, Iris Robinson asserted:

“ “There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing innocent children” ”
—Iris Robinson - House of Commons committee minutes[21]

Thanks, Doug (I think) ... you're not so bad yourself.

I'm a committed anti-xian. That's part of me, and I'll be as proud of that as any xian is of their beliefs. In my opinion, xianity (historically, politically and biblically - I've studied theology and read widely on this) is *not* about love. That may be a sub-context that you can take from the (what I would see as) heavily edited gospels that were chosen from a variety of writings at the time to make up the xian canon of scripture - but it's not the central theme of scripture, nor, indeed, of the god described throughout such.

The reason that I speak vehmently against religion (and often xianity) is because I really beleive that it is destroying our world. Sorry, but that's my opinion.

I apologise for offending you, DM, but not for stating what I believe. We both have the right, as you have said, to that freedom of speech. Hopefully, though, we can avoid getting engulfed in a tit-for-tat argy-bargy in the spirit of...

Well, Hoo Haa - I am certainly not mad or upset at you, and really not totally offended at your post, just felt like I had to put my two cents in! I do know how devastatingly difficult it is to convince a person of no faith that there is a God, because if you don't have faith, you just will never get it, and you know what? Not everyone is supposed to get it.

But we can all still get along, especially when it comes to lurvin' zombies goodness! I mean, I love your writing Hoo Haa, and how could someone who writes that well be bad?

See, now Iris Robinson now has become a part of the growing number of fucking thugs who I need to skull rape with a power drill in order to cleanse the world of fucking bigotry and hatred.

If that's not Christian of me, I understand that.

Sometimes, you have to do the wrong thing so that good people do not suffer, and denigrating pederasty by making it as weak a sin (IT'S NOT EVEN A SIN!  IT WAS JUST A RULE SO THAT THE JEWS COULD KEEP BREEDING IN THE FUCKING DESERT!) as homosexuality (repeat, not A SIN!) is a good enough cause for me to commit mass murder on a global scale.

Five seconds after I get the powers of a Kryptonian or the speed of the Flash, word of many of these bigots exploding as a fat blur pulverizes them at transsonic speed will begin reaching airwaves.

While I consider myself a Christian, I can also admit that, historically, that's a very Christian sentiment.  Eliminate all those who don't believe what we do.  :-[

We call them Crusades.  Some people call them Jihads.  Ann Coulter calls them presidential campaigns.   ;)

It's not really a matter of disagreement.

It's me hating someone for hating blindly, engaging in worthless persecution, and meandering to make themselves morally superior when all they're doing is farting methane holes in the ozone.

Actually... it probably is all the same.

I guess even such fury for the right reasons is not good.

Still, I'd hate to have Iris Robinson alive to celebrate that moral victory.
