Watch short film "Snuff" online!
« on: November 05, 2007, 12:46:24 AM »

I co-wrote this short a few years back for the Timberwolf Entertainment release Detour Into Madness Vol 1. You can see it in its entirety on YouTube here.

I tried to watch this, but my internet is running super slow tonight.  The movie kept freezing.  I'm gonna try again tomorrow.  Can't wait to see it!

Thanks! This was directed by Joe Patnaud, who recently had an editing gig on Rob Zombie's Halloween and is set to direct the feature Live Bait from my script. That was originally scheduled to start this year but they're still getting investors together.

I loved it!  I love the slasher flicks, anyway . . . ala Texas Chainsaw Masacre.  The guy who played the director REALLY pulled off creepy.  It starts off scary and ends scary.  Way to go.  I won't say too much as I don't want to give it away.

I can't wait till this gets backing and gets made feature length.  The time is right for this film, Dave.  Your story should be riding the current wave and I have a feeling that it will.

Cheers to you!

Thanks so much! It does seem like the perfect time for a feature-length version; in fact, I heard there's a film coming out with the same plot & similar characters. :P Still, I'm continuing to work on a script that uses this short as its prologue & then goes in a new direction.

That was impressive, Dave!  I really liked it, the whole thing from start to finish.  Looked like a lot of fun to make.  Of course, I liked the end, too.  That was perfect!  Thanks for the experience.

Thanks Brandon! The ending was my favorite part. The guy who plays the Director, William DeCoff, captured the character perfectly with his manic performance.

Yeah.  What I liked about it was the comical aspect of the ending.  I have this theory on great horror.  When it's that good, my demented humor kicks in and makes me chuckle, no matter how twisted, and Snuff definitely did that for me.  Great job!

"Snuff" has gotten nearly 2000 views in the two weeks it's been posted!

I thought it might be interesting to share some of the original script (a more interesting reason to bump this thread, anyway!):

                                   DIRECTOR
In the hands of a capable director,
even the most inept performers can
                         rise above their talents...
                             (beat)
                         Tanya?

She looks back at the Director. He whispers maliciously.

                                   DIRECTOR
                         Action.

The rear door flies open, and the towering ASSISTANT - his
face concealed behind an iron mask like something out of a
medieval S&M nightmare - explodes into the room.

               Tanya screams.

                                   DIRECTOR
                         THAT'S what I'm talking about!

Her scream is cut off by the Assistant slamming a thick club
into the back of her head. She drops instantly, spitting up
an obscene amount of blood before passing out.

The Director strafes around the kill to catch all the bloody
               action on-camera.

Bobbi bolts for the exit. The Assistant is quicker than his
size would lead one to believe, and he cuts her off,
backhanding her into the Director's arms.

                                                       FADE TO:

               INT. SET - LATER

Hours have passed. Bobbi opens her eyes and finds herself
bound, gagged and tied to a table in the same room.

The Director shines a lamp right in her face, then moves it
back, lighting his shot. The camera is set up nearby.

                                   DIRECTOR
                         God, that was perfect. Completely
improvised. Did you see her face?

Is he talking to Bobbi...? Then the silent Assistant shuffles
               past, dragging Tanya's unconscious body.

                                   BOBBI
                         Tanya!

Tanya stirs, but remains mute as the Assistant hauls her out
               of sight.

The Director sits in a chair and scrutinizes Bobbi.

                                   DIRECTOR (CONT'D)
I've been making films for fifteen
years. Let me ask you something -
I'm going to take the gag out. It
                         doesn't really matter if you
scream, no one's around for miles
to hear you, but it's really
annoying. So if you scream, my
assistant will saw your head off.
                         Fair enough?

He removes the gag from her trembling lips.

                                   BOBBI
                             (terrified)
What do you want? I thought this
was an audition for a movie?

                                   DIRECTOR
                             (deadly serious)
                         Darling, this is the movie.

I still need to watch the whole thing. It started getting choppy for me at six minutes a week or so back... Probably because of the clouds.

Anyway, you screenwrite in a COMPLETELY different style than I do. Not that I screenwrite a while lot, it's just that...

well, I won't go into it and spam the topic, lol.

I will get to this soon... Possibly later today... When I've had sleep.

Feel free to go into it here if you wish, Kody. :) I've read scripts written in lots of different styles, and it definitely took some time to find my own voice (hell, I'm still working on it).

Probably better if I just attach it instead. MY friend Mathieu, who wanted me to write a script with him, hasn't done anything with it yet because he's busy with college, but he said he's going to turn it into something. He told me to stop writing it until he had more time to work on it...

But yeah, this is how I screenwrite.

Ah, I see. I use Final Draft, which pretty much does the formatting for you (but here's a detailed breakdown of the standard - which looks down on using italics, but I added those for the above post).

I just format the stuff as to my screenwriting ability. It was like when my teacher tried to make me use an outline for a paper. As I am in online school, I was confused as to the outline.

I
A
I
II
B
C

And such like that. I had NO idea how to do it, so I did my own. Then when I got a bad grade, I redid it.  :D With help, of course.

I'm the kind of person who does things my own way, heheheheeheh...

Well, unless you're in a position where the proper format is required, I say do it however works best for ya. It doesn't sound like Mathieu has any complaints. If I hadn't had Final Draft to automatically position everything for me, Lord knows how long it would've taken me to learn the format. FD is expensive as hell, too. Luckily the screenwriting fairy paid me a visit one night and left it under my pillow. yes
