For those who don't know, black gunpowder is some FUNKY stuff.

First, it makes scads of fouling, which is hygroscopic-it draws and holds water. This means the gun must be cleaned every time it's used, and several days thereafter.

Second, it's pretty powerful stuff, you can make a jim- dandy bomb with it.

Third, it's liable to become more powerful and more sensitive with time-some archeologists at a Civil War battlefield departed skyward unexpectedly when they passed a metal detector over a very large mortar shell about a century old.

The Dupont fortune was founded on their powder mill.

Finally, guncotton(nitrocellulose) is so easy to make, it was first made by accident. But I'm not going to tell you how, just as I won't reveal the one step that keeps home made nitroglycerine stable.

It's not good to know. :cthulhu:

how about electric ignition with cap and ball? or something like it? rechargable batteries are cool, though i don't know how long they'd last.

You know those trigger activated "Aim and Flame" lighters?  They use the spark generated by a piezoelectric crystal.  Probably pretty good shelf life and simple machining to make new sparkers.

Been ages since I saw anything-I don' read much gun-porn any more.

As I recall, it involved a class of monster target rifles, the kind that's so heavy and bulky it looks like a small cannon with a .22 bore. further, deponent saith not. :cthulhu:

I want a gun that fires really big bullets which, after being fired, separate into lots of smaller bullets, which then electronically target all of the major organs in the human body and then, after puncturing said organs, automatically work their way through the body and converge into one big bullet again, which then explodes and shoots lava out the top of the guy's head while simultaneously separating into lots of small bullets again and firing out of his body in all directions to take out all the people standing around him.

Also, I'd like this gun to be mounted onto a robot arm. And I want to be able to use it while riding a fire-breathing cyborg centaur. Covered with, like, gold and rhinestones and shit. With a really hot girl on the back who totally wants to do me and stuff.

"Low self-esteem." Ha. I'll show those fuckers.

Yeah? Well I want ot be the guy who, when he's shot by your multi-bullet, lava-spouting gun shrugs it off and says, "Is that all you got?"

And then the hot chick will totally dump you and run to me. :P

While we consider odd firearms, we should note the roman candle gun.

Not terribly reliable, but when it worked reliably terrible, various designs included muskets, revolvers and pistols.

Some had elaborate sliding locks to ignite the superimposed loads, others were just like a roman candle, once started, they continued until the ammunition was gone, or the thing misfired. Or blew up.

The Manhatten Firearms Company, producers of Colt clones, made a superimposed load revolver that might, or might not fire 12 shots from a single loading. There were a lot of Manhatten revolvers about, Colt often being hard pressed to satisfy demand, not all were of the superimposed type, but seems they failed to become a legend in any configuration. :cthulhu:

Elmer Fudd created the first ever smart weapon. Before him had anyone else fired a weapon that changed direction to service it's target?

The Spear of Lugh would find its mark no matter where the target was, and then fly back to the thrower's hand. Though obviously, it wasn't a gun.

My source was wrong on the superimposed Manhattan, it was actually the Walch.

This monkey motion contraption had two hammers and two triggers. Cock both hammers, the squeeze off the proper trigger......oh, my, got a bit flustered, did we?  Mercy! What a mess!

There were several 12 shot pin-fire revolvers-oddly enough, there are still a few pin fire guns made today, teeny little novelty blank bangers.

One funny movie gun is the wind up gun in "The Fabulous World of Jules Verne", first time it's fired, it makes a pathetic pop, but the villain quickly winds it up and lets rip with a stream of shots like a Tommy gun.

Great fun! :cthulhu:
