Elements of the Apocalypse cover sketches
« on: November 02, 2006, 08:53:59 AM »

Elements of the Apocalypse aka Four Elements of the Apocalypse (we haven't decided on the official title yet) is a collection of 4 apocalyptic novellas.  Each novella details the apocalypse as caused by one of the four Greek elements: fire, earth, air, water.

Tentatively to be included in the collection are D.L. Snell (fire), R. Thomas Riley (earth), Ryan C. Thomas (water), and Philip Hansen (air).

Here are some cover sketches by artist Chris Elliot.  These are potentially characters that will appear on the cover.

Those look pretty cool.

I would really like to see some of the other work that the artist has done. Does Chris Elliot have a website?

He doesn't have a website that I know of.  He's got a few pieces posted in his Myspace pics page.  I told him I'd like the cover to be in the style of his piece "Reign of the Lich King" which you can see there.

The Reign of the Lich King style will look nice, especially considering the subject matter. That sort of style really does fit.

Hey everyone, I'm planning on doing some more roughs for the cover this weekend - things have been pretty busy lately but this weekend is now looking like a good one to get a bit of work done.

I think you'd need to be logged into 'myspace'  to see the picture gallery but now I've moved a lot of the artwork out onto the front page so you should be able to see it here: http://www.myspace.com/dislodge

My stuff is down the right hand side of the page...

The Earthly Grim Reaper at the top is very cool.  Very menacing.

Good job Chris.  If these are just your sketches thus far I'm sure it's going to turn out great.

Elliot is a great guy, and a great illustrator.  I've known him since his college days years ago.  In fact, we had a great time hanging at Rue Morgue's Festival of Fear this year - eh, bud? (I'm on the left...with the tongue!)

Here's a test for the water reaper ... I was dabbling with the idea of having an ice skull under a hood of water but what came out was a squid for a skull floating in a watery body - but I like it?!

Chris, the water reaper looks great. In fact, all the reapers look cool so far. How did you plan to bring them all together on the cover?

I'd talked about having Earth floating in space with the reapers sort of crouching/reaching around it menacingly.  But Chris may have a better idea.

Actually ... maybe you should try a cityscape (depending how wide spread the apocalypse is!), that way you can also show side effects of the destruction in the foreground (ie road in foreground with waves of water, fire etc etc).  Just an idea!  : ;D

Very cool images so far!  I like them alot!
