Yeah, well that always happens. I enjoyed the Road Warrior, Day of the Dead influences mixed into the movie. And the fact, as you mentioned, that they focused on the zombies.

Oh, was it just me or did the first experimental zombie look A LOT like John Malkovich?

Hey, I'm not sure, but Mila did... Well, you know, come back to life. Maybe a second chance at life gives a girl perfect eyebrows and glossy lips?  ???

I haven't seen it yet... I'll be waiting until it comes out on DVD. PLEASE don't let it be until next year, PLEASE!

They'll probably end up doing that though.

DNB, you are right with the Day of the Dead references, they practically ripped off Bub. But then again, Romero worked on the Resident Evil games, or something like that, I forget what he did exactly. Perhaps was a consultant? So maybe it was a tribute scene. I dunno.

I didn't get to see it, but after reading the book, I'm pretty sure that this will be the best RE movie/book in the series.  >:D

I'm looking forward to this. The last couple of RES movies didn't do much for me, but this one seems to have me interested again.

I agree, Diva. Although I did like the first one. The second one had too many damn sub plots. I think they were just trying to get away from the 'mass zombie' thing as in the first, but I don't think it worked out all that well. This new one looks awesome.

Just got this in my email, from my good buddy C.J.

WARNING: Spoilers to follow, so scroll down at your own risk!

 RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION

 Reviewed by C.J. Henderson

 Rated: R

 Screen Gems, 2007

Well, the last couple of weeks have seen the release of a lot of
"important" movies. You know, the ones Hollywood wants to start
generating "Oscar buzz" over. Which, of course, generally means
boring, over-wrought films, the kind that put you to sleep and fill
you with a need to demand your money back.

This week's film is not one of those. This week's film is the kind
that makes you glad to go to the movies. Well, if you're a lover of
flesh-craving, bone-breaking, fast running zombies, that is. And
really, who doesn't, these days? Mel Brook's son is still riding high
after writing "World War Z," his zombie magnum opus, super zombie
editor has just released his latest collection of world class zombie
tales, "The Dead Walk Again," and the cinema has brought us the third
"Resident Evil" movie.

Who says there isn't a Santa Claus?

The story: Alice (Milla Jovovich) wakes up exactly as she did in the
first film, and things go the same way they did for a few minutes.
After a while, though, we discover that this isn't Alice, but a
clone. Seems the Umbrella Corporation is up to their old tricks. They
want to get their hands on Alice because they think that her blood
holds the key to fixing the mess the planet is in. And the planet is
in a mess--the virus Umbrella let get out of control in movie #1 has
ravaged the planet. Most life has died out. The zombies are in
charge.

Now, this secret they're after, this doesn't mean they think they
can cure everyone, get rid of the zombies or anything else sensible.
No, what they're up to is searching for a serum which will make the
zombies docile. They're looking for a work force so they can rule
what's left of the world. All they need to do is get their hands on
our heroine and murder her for her blood.

This is a swell little film. Jovovich has come a long way since her
first starring role in "The Fifth Element." Practically a child in
her first movie, here she is all woman--and understand, that's not a
sexist statement. Simple and, yes--in some ways--as trite as this
movie is, it gives its star the chance to really run the gamut of
emotions. Jovovich does a fantastic job with what little she is given
to work with, again making herself the central focus of the picture
through the sheer excellence of her performance.

Of course, some of the credit for that will have to be placed at the
feet of director Russell Mulcahy ("Highlander," "Mysterious Island").
Mulcahy is the third director to have his way with the franchise, and
he does right by it. After the relentless darkness and neon fire
fights of the second, the straight-forward, bleaching sunlight
effects of this film are almost a blessing.

Do understand, this is not a rave, although it must certainly sound
like one. It's been a bad couple of weeks for movies, and so anything
with some action and sizzle to it was going to get some good words
from me. As far as the franchise goes, the first film is still the
best. The second was not nearly as inventive as the first, but it was
a good, solid ride. This third venture is better than the second by
far, but a few degrees away from being as good as the first. In the
world of sequels, that's doing pretty good.

The film does borrow a great deal from the Romero "Living Dead"
films, but then so do most zombie pictures. Some folks were
complaining after the screening that the movie didn't do anything
new. And, in the case of its zombies, no, it didn't. What I feel
these fine fellows missed, however, is that in the matter of dealing
with the zombies, the film is very original. The changes that come
about in Alice's character are understandable, intelligent, and well
done. Really, it's all we can ask.

The writing is fairly standard, and the sets, locations, costumes,
soundtrack and the such are what we've come to expect in a mid-range
film. All of it competent, all of it seeming pretty cookie cutter.
Still, we have to remember, there's nothing wrong with using a cookie
cutter. We don't care what shape the cookies are in. We just want them
to taste good.

This new batch of "Resident Evil" cookies, I must admit they don't
taste too bad. Not bad at all.

My Final Word: 4 stars out of 5.

I just watched this film and thought it was utterly awesome, could Milla Jovovich get more sexy? I thought not till i watched this movie, she kicks ass as a Road Warrior.

SPOILER ALERT

The whole concept of the movie is excellent. As in most zombie movies i've seen, its the human element which displays the most evil (as in what that group were going to do to Alice at the beginning with another woman egging them on), and the human element being capable of the most profound acts of goodness, as in the self sacrifice of some of the protagonists throughout the film.

The only thing better than one uber sexy Milla is a whole army of them  ;)
Looking forward to number 4

As a fan of zombie genre and big fan of the games I have to say that whole RE movie series is... shite.

Part one somehow defended itself, pulled the weight. Too bad RE was all about zombies (and some other nasty creatures) and here rogue system murders more humans then all undeads and mutants together (elvator, sprinklers + doors, laser grid). I never understood why they used new characters when first part of the game had perfect setting.

Second part was even worse. There was Jill and Nemesis for game fans, but too late and too little. It's watchable.

Third part - brain dead Anderson decided to wipe out whole vegetation on the planet and turned it into desert. It seems like virus kills plants too? Niiice. Anyway - hordes of zombies everywhere and Umbrella is still trying to perfect the virus. What for? Market is GONE. No one will buy it, no one to use it on as there are zombies everywhere. Also - at this stage Alice is so bad ass she can kick asses with the power of her MIND! When I've finished watching this movie I've said to my friend: this is it, in next part she will push planets out of orbits and fart with fire.

Fourth part - pissed me off. Yes - I can appreciate attempt to "tone down" which resulted in killing stupid clones and turning Alice into human again. Still - he mixed creatures from part 5 with zombies. Result - fast zombies with big mouth. Flying in the plane, cities are burning. who sets them on fire when humans extinct in extinction? More and more experiments - in the game Wesker really wanted to be superhuman. He wanted to be a king and in part 5 of the game to speed up evolution of our species. In movies his goals are the same, but he would be king of dead planet. Of course they HAD to do another stupid ending with Umbrella planes flying towards the ship. We have Alice, Chris and Claire plus dozens of confused and defensless citizens on Un-checked ship (probably dozens of zombies under deck) being assaluted by dropships with guns and troops inside.

Part five - saw two trailers. I'm definitely not going to see the fifth. Anderson does not have a solid concept, idea for a movie. It's like watching videoclips taped together by 5 year old kid. No sense at all. Just another reason to earn some bucks and squeeze new wife into S&M bondage costumes with lots of straps and buckles. Gimme a break! Silent Hill was better!

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to come to the defense of the Resident Evil movies.

The movies are, at heart, popcorn fiction and I like the fact they don't make any attempt to pretend to be otherwise.

Adapting the first game of the series also something which would have lead to a lot of problems in terms of having to stick to the games.

(Also, the Umbrella corporation is trying to stop the Zombie Apocalypse by making super-soldiers not doing it for the market)

Yes, they're silly and yes they're dumb, but they're about Mila kicking butt against hordes of the dead.

Must they be more?

Eeeh...honestly, I can only put the first movie in that category.  While it f'ed up a LOT of things (no nod to the original characters, severe lack of creatures from a game overflowing with them, took their big bad from the wrong game, etc.), it was at least fairly well-balanced as a cheesy B horror movie, and I actually rather enjoy the beginning of it.  However, the sequels are...not good.  I rented the second one years ago and felt like I was watching a really bad direct-to-video or cable movie.  The fact that the film actually included some of the game characters and did virtually nothing with them only made it more insulting.  Only Alice is allowed to kick-ass, and that's a big problem as it makes the rest of the cast effectively useless and boring to watch.  I think anyone would have trouble denying that Anderson is only making these movies as an excuse to make bad fan fiction for his wife to star in.  She's an entertaining lady to watch (and one who would be far better served by doing new roles under the supervision of far more competent directors), but that does not a good film make.

Well, it's just my opinion. It is possible to do a decent movie which will satisfy all. Avengers for example. I'm not complaining because in those movies physics is almost non existend, but phleease. Milla kicking butt can't make everything right! I loved Milla in 5th Element.

So - yeah. No one here is defending movies, everyone is in love with Milla :)
