Wargaming Miniatures....
« on: May 29, 2012, 09:31:21 PM »

Who plays and what?  I recently have gotten into them, introduced by a game called Dark Age, but have interests in Warhammer, 40K, and Warmachine "Hordes" as well.  I love to build models mostly of WWII planes, but have done some "kitbashing"of cars and the like.  It really appeals to me especially the fact that you can actually use the model for something after you build it and they take up a lot less room.  There is a superhero one called Pulpcity heros that looks like it has promise also.

When I get my first miniatures painted, I will post pictures and display my geekness for all to see.

I used to buy roleplaying miniatures (Grenadier, etcetera) as a teenager. I still have a few hundred of the things sitting around in boxes - orcs and kobolds, dwarves and elves, barbarians and warriors of various types, thieves and assassins, wizards and clerics, skeletons and zombies, vampires and werewolves, kings and queens, barmaids and beggars, and even some oddities like swarms of lizards, and a mounted halfling knight. I also have a few Games Workshop models (including bits and pieces of the venerable Heroquest) and some from sci-fi games (including Warhammer 40K).

The majority of them are still unpainted, because I loved collecting them and using them in games, but never had the patience or persistence to get busy with the brush. I keep meaning to brush up (snerk) on my skills, dig out a few of my old favourites and finally give 'em the paint job they deserve.

I had a few of the old Citadel D&D figures as a kid, but could never figure out why people would want to paint them.  :D

Back in the late '90s a few friends got me into Warhammer 40K.  I love building (and customizing) the models far more than playing the game.  Although once I went to the full time writer thing I had to find cheaper ways to feed my habit.

I have a couple Warhammer Fantasy models that I bought just for their looks.  I love Lizardmen, Arthurian knights, and the undead too much not to be drawn in by some of them.  But I just have no interest in the fantasy game whatsoever.

I too had some Citadel figures as a kid, and I tried painting them, but I can't say I was ever any good.

When I got older, my painting got better.  I did some RPG figures, I started painting in earnest once I started working with Warhammer 40k.  Imperial Guard and Chaos were my favorite.  And once I got good enough, I went on to conversions and terrain.  I just love making these things.

Recently, I tried to get back into it.  Warmachine attracted me, but I found I had issues dividing writing time from hobby time.  I've had to give the hobby up for now.  Otherwise, I wouldn't get any work done.

I used to have a bunch of figures for D&d but we always went back to pen and paper. Mainly because we were riding our bikes everywhere and had too many manuals to carry in our backpack!

The silence of building/painting doesn't give you the quiet time needed to help you with ideas for writing? Or do you get too focused on the painting?

I tend to get obsessed over whatever project I am working on.  Working on miniatures.  Geneaology.  Working out.  I will pursue one at the expense of other things in my life.  Balance has always been an issue.  Maybe if I had more hours in my day, I can work something else in.  I found I was able to manage working out and writing when I was working part-time, but well, bills have to be paid.

When I started painting again though, I found a lot of resources on the web and especially youtube.  Resources I wished I'd had years ago since I'd pretty much been learning on my own.

I know all too well what you mean about the obsession thing.  I have managed to tone mine down a bit, maybe I've mellowed in my "old age".  I admit I don't have as much time for my hobbies but I have accepted that.  The time I have for my hobbies are now more quality than quantity.  I now balance fishing, writing, gaming, and modeling.  I have also found the youtube info although I haven't had achance to watch anything yet.

Awwww... My lovely lady decided to feed my addiction for my birthday.  A whole pile of little toy soldiers and tanks and flyers and big flying things from beyond reality that should not be named...

Aww, bless!  Happy belated birthday btw.  ;D

i can't get into the gaming side of things at all, it's far too complicated for my poor brain to deal with.  I tend to stick to painting.  At the moment i'm cannibilising some Space Marines, adding female heads because i really want a female Space Marine unit and no one seems to know why i can't have one.  ;D

Have you done any Battle Sisters, Mrs. Rakie?  I am getting into both painting and gaming.  Actually I am even working on creating my own game, with a "Weird West" motif.

i'm saving up for some Battle Sisters, but what i'd really like is some bog standard fighters that are female.  It bugs me that i can't, say, swap out some of my Imperial Guard for female versions.  That seems like a fairly major oversight in a highly-customisable game.

I'm new to the game and I've never heard of Bog Standard fighters.  Have you tried online?  Or customizing?

I've always thought it's a huge oversight on GW's part not to make female Guardsmen.  Even if they were just a bonus pack of finecast models--here's three female Cadians/ Catachans/ Tallarns/ Tanith in different poses.  Since most of the sets come with extra/separate weapons, you could just make them with arms in position to drop a lasgun/ special weapon/ sniper rifle into place.

They'r make their money back just off the few dozen folks with tons of disposable income who decide to do an all female army and buy seventy of those three-model packs I just mentioned.

...and, wow, that was a super geeky post on my part, wasn't it?   :D
