The Cabin In The Woods
« on: April 08, 2012, 09:32:58 PM »

I had to make a separate topic because I cannot say enough good stuff about this movie.  It's scary.  Parts are under-your-skin disturbing.  Parts are hysterically funny.

That being said, I don't want to say anything about this movie.  Don't read reviews.  Avoid know-it-all spoilers.  Just go see it.  Try to see it with as little advance knowledge as possible, past the fact that it's a horror movie by Joss Whedon.

You will never, ever forgive yourself if you let some of the story get spoiled for you and experience it out of context.

I cannot wait for this to come out on DVD so I can own it.

This and Prometheus are the only two horror movies I'm genuinely interested in this year (so far, anyway).

I saw it today.  Much, much better than I expected.  My only real gripe is that it took me a little longer than it should have to warm up to the characters.  I found them all pretty douchey in their introduction.  Then again, that was part of the joke.

Saw that last night.  Talked with peeps I went with a bit about how we felt more for the controllers than the puppets.  Still, was fun.

I think you're right on that score, V, especially given what the two "survivors" did at the end.

I've skipped over the spoilers for Cabin in the Woods, however I am just going to put this out there.

I have a horrible feeling that Prometheus is going to be shit.

There I've said it. Don't ask me to justify why, I can't.

I had a totally different reaction to the movie than Vic and Pru. The campers came across as much more sympathetic than the usual teens in the woods, and the puppeteers were some cold-blooded skunks.

As for the decision at the end . . . it seemed dark, but appropriate.

It's hard to say anything without spoilers but I really liked this. It was relentlessly smart and unexpected.

Yeah, I didn't mind the ending.  I will say the whole thing just felt like a tv episode of one of his shows.  Not that that's a bad thing, just that it was there.  I read that someone said it was the greatest Buffy ep that never was, and I'll go with that.

One thing I really liked about this was how it implicated the audience along with the bad guys. It did an insidious take on us as we watch brutality, caring more for the gallows humor and glimpses of nudity than the characters. Whedon has always been a vocal critic of slasher and torture-porn movies, and the common audience reactions. That comes through lous and clear here.
