I do have to agree with the salient point of this piece - YOU NEED TO READ!

I had read Pale Horse Coming last summer, by Stephen Hunter, and my god, the man had crafted a time travel spell within those pages.  It was enough to inspire, and keep strong, the work I'm doing right now for private, personal publishing.

His story took place in 51.  Mine's going on in 47.  There's very little crossover, except for both main heroes being war veterans.

But the cadence, the style, it brought me back to a ifferent era, and it was an era I wanted to play in.

Reading gives you that fire and inspiration.

I know a girl who is dying to get published. She claims to have read half a dozen books on getting published and is highly upset at her lack of success.

Problem is? She hasn't written anything as she won't write anything until she has been paid for a story. She said something like "If someone would just give me an advance I could have a great outline done in one night."

I just recently had someone give me the "I'll give you the idea, you write it, and we'll split everything 50/50" line with complete honesty. He was my neighbor, so I couldn't kill him without suspicion.

Doug, I've also become rather obsessed with the 40s.  For me, it's the 40s and the early 60s.  The latter you can blame on DL Snell for getting me hooked on Mad Men.

Zombiemutts and Chicken . . . who are these heretics you speak of?  I light torch and meet you in the town square . . .
