Drizzt Do'Urden novels
« on: December 19, 2011, 05:16:18 PM »

From the "What I've been reading" thread.

http://unitedfederationofcharles.blogspot.com/2011/12/gauntlgrym-neverwinter-saga-1-review.html

I was really surprised they were still making them but, apparently, RA Salvatore was told that Wizards of the Coast will continue making these novels with or without his involvement so he might as well keep getting paid for them. It was the same interference that lead to getting Wulfgar brought back.

Still, I've got to say, I enjoyed the latest book(s). I just finished "Neverwinter" and it's incredibly amusing to watch RA Salvatore attempt to write Drizzt as a morally ambiguous anti-hero.

That's....for those who've read the novels, you understand why that's an inherently funny concept.

^ do you by chance have anymore on that? I could have sworn WWC shut down. I am assuming someone bought their name and the contracts shifted over.

I read one of these years ago, the first one I think. I remember being amazed at how naive the character was. He managed to reach adulthood before he noticed that his people were a bloodthirsty and devious culture.

Cover look like this?

If so yeah that is the very first one. And Drizzt has had a few character rewrites since that one. If I recall he was a bit of a happy go lucky ranger in that one.

Well, RA is writing the series as a tie-in to the Neverwinter MMORPG, and I've heard about the interference in his writing. I don't know if it's Wizards of the Coast but I assume it's Hasbro now doing it through whatever office passes for them now. I read about both in interviews, though he was VERY light-stepped around the, "Bring back Wulfgar" bit.

I've heard a bit more about both on Candlekeep, though I understand that's less reliable.

nope, not that cover.

The one I read was him growing up in the underground drow city. At the end he finally realizes it's not a nice place and leaves home to seek his fortune.

I actually liked that book. It was a nice attempt at doing a Chaotic Evil Society.

My review of the latest book.

Really, I'm enjoying the new trilogy more than any of the series. That includes the "Homeland" trilogy and the "Thousand Orcs" one. It's just fun seeing Drizzt freed from his usual baggage.

Thanks to Terry Goodkind I am pretty burned out on fantasy but maybe I should give these a shot.

I threw that first book down in rage after Richard's obviously evil brother blatantly groped the obvious love interest's ass.  Goodkind might as well have written the brother a twirly mustache and monocle.  The whole damn opening was paint-by-numbers fantasy, but that brother booty grope was the final straw for me.

Thankfully that offending scene occurred around page 50, so little time and effort was wasted.

As far as the Do'Urden books, they're alright: nothing amazing, but good fast reading with solid Salvatore action.  I would suggest borrow or buy used.

Have you tried "Name of the Wind?" It comes highly-recommended.

I am sure it happens. RA has a nasty habit of killing off a character and then pulling a “fooled you!” the next book. Didn’t he even do that with Chewbacca in a Star Wars book?  Vector Prime I think.

No, Chewbacca actually died and he got death threats over it. It was the only Star Wars book he ever wrote, sadly.
