I'm sure most folks here have heard about this. Louis C.K. cut his own comedy video and released it dirt cheap with no protection, encouraging people to share it openly.

While I've already seen a few people touting this as "proof" the old system is dead, I think that the article is pretty balanced.  It is a sign of things to come and a definite sign that there are more options in the digital age, but at the moment it's a freak occurrence--a novelty at best.  A novelty that Louis only managed because he's already a well known comedian and television star (he was just a guest on Conan) who was found and marketed by the existing studio system.

Food for thought.  Discuss.  Debate.  Mock openly.

I don't know more than that, but it must mean something.

The Plant, yeah.  But there were a bunch of issues with that.  You weren't buying the book, you were just buying chapters.  The pricing bounced around a lot, too.

It was also over ten years ago.  He did his experiment with The Plant in 2000 (the year before 9/11--think of it that way) so it's arguable he was too far ahead of the curve to even count.

True, but he only started his radical ideas in, what... 2007, I think?  King was way, way ahead.  Plus, Reznor was coming off a ten year career as a very successful and popular musician.  Like with Louis CK, it does skew the results a bit.

And didn't Reznor just make his stuff completely free, no need to pay at all?  It's kind of an apples and oranges comparison, how much did you give away vs how much did I sell.

I don't know more than that, but it must mean something.

He did it one chapter at a time back around 2000 when people still used dial up. So you were looking at some ugly screen shots trying to read a book. If I remember right he ended up just giving people the rest of it.

Didn't radiohead try a "pay what you want" model? I think, from memory, they did ok out of it, but they already a pretty dedicated fan base. I would think that if you had the type of fans who are dedicated to you, rather than impulse buyers, that would help considerably.

I wonder what the e-market is for Harlequin romances?  I would think the Kindle/Nook (hereinafter referred to as "Nookle") is tailor-made for "disposable" reading of that ilk--you no longer have those huge piles of paperbacks to deal with.
