BEFORE THE DAWN update thread
« on: December 13, 2011, 02:50:12 PM »

Before the Dawn is the first in (hopefully) a series of novels about Io, from Dark Tomorrow's Faceless P.I. series.

on the website, Io is an established Centurion, well into his career as a mystical, magical troubleshooter. the novel will take place early on, less than a year after he receives his Roman numeral. i'm aiming high, hoping to make this a series with legs. i've said it a lot now, but i want this to be like Io's Casino Royale.

the first chapter is written. the second chapter is in progress.

BY THE WAY: blame Miles Boothe. after accepting the second Io short story for The Trigger Reflex, he and i talked about the state of series novels today, and Miles said something that i'll never forget:

"Here's the thing: you're nailing it with the imagery (white hair with rings, tattoos, name, blue nimbus, etc.) and his general perspective. He's a dead ringer for a series—and I think that whenever I read his stories. I read tons and tons of stuff, and he's a great character. He's a better character, imo, than Harry Dresden, and look where Jim Butcher has gotten."

thanks, Miles. just remember, if this takes off . . . you're to blame.  ;D

Chapter One: The Troll Bridge 3.2k
Chapter Two: The Letter 5.9k
Chapter Three: New Faces 1 (in progress)

9k down. 66K to go. which is cool, but these are my last few days at work. i may or may not get some work done on this while i'm home, but i don't expect to. hah, i'll be too busy being Daddy, a role for which i will GLADLY put this down. ;D

this feels weird. i just wrote a chapter in which nothing happens. after the SSPIII with D.L. Snell, where something was always happening, and Sad Wings which was the same, it is really weird to devote an entire chapter to underscoring something about the main character. i'm not sure how it came out, but if i did it right, i might be on the road to being a novelist.

I took a writer's workshop with Robert J Sawyer (Hugo and Nebula award winner) a while back, and one of the things he warned about was the trap of "One Damned Thing After Another" storytelling.  At some point, the story (and the characters, and the reader) need a moment to breathe.  Sounds like you're getting the hang of this.

Falling down stairs is exciting, but you wouldn't want to do it all day long.

I think you should drop everything to work on this one, but it's possible that I'm biased.

according to my projected word count, i'm at about 27% done with the novel. so YAY! Chapter Four almost done, about a thousand words to go.

Chapter One: The Troll Bridge 3.2k
Chapter Two: The Letter 5.9k
Chapter Three: New Places 6.1k
Chapter Four: New Faces 6k
Chapter Five: Crimson Fish - in progress

horrible, horrible week of writing so far. the output, not the quality, i hope. i'm lagging a bit. diffused, i think. next week should yield KICKASS results. these titles are just for me and you, i think, and may go away when i put them all into one file. i don't know yet.

thanks to the Permuted PIT, Miles Boothe and D.L. Snell for reading this stuff while it's unpolished and in-progress.

Chapter Two: The Letter 5.9k
Chapter Three: New Places 6.1k
Chapter Four: New Faces 6k
Chapter Five: Shapes 6k
Chapter Six: Crimson Fish - in progress

this next chapter should be gruesome. and it's about time.

EDIT: i'm a little behind on my schedule. i blame editing progress on Pavlov's Dogs, which is okay, actually. we're trying to stay on-track with that one, since we have a target release date.

Chapter Two: The Letter 5.9k
Chapter Three: New Places 6.1k
Chapter Four: New Faces 6k
Chapter Five: Shapes 6k
Chapter Six: Crimson Fish 5.7k
Chapter Seven - The Fifth Dimension - in progress

that's more like it. i don't think i can catch up before it's time to go home, but that's much better. i can tell when i'm a groove while i'm writing: i play an album while i write, and from time to time, i notice the music has stopped and has been stopped for a good ten or fifteen minutes. that's how i know things are humming along.
