Facebook Purge
« on: October 05, 2011, 01:38:49 PM »

I bring this up here because it's going to affect a lot of folks here.

I'm going to be doing a massive cull in my friends list, probably tonight or tomorrow.  Facebook's new system is just a little too much transparency for my liking.  It's one thing to share things with friends, but it's entirely another to share it with friends of friends.  About 200 people got access to a picture of my niece because I commented on it.  Which meant any of you could've commented on it and then everyone on your lists would have access to that picture.

The more friends you have, the more of a threat you are to my privacy and to her privacy.  I think it's stupid, too, but I'm not the guy who changed how things work.  If someone's got over 300 friends, they're on the short list.  Over 400 and they're gone.  Don't even bother sending friend requests if you're in that category.  And that's why it'll affect folks here, because I know a lot of you use your personal page on Facebook as a fan page (including the Permuted Press page).

And I don't have any problem being friends with any of you.  But I'm not going to be a friend to your fan page.  Not anymore, anyway.

Yes, I know there's a bunch of settings.  All I need to do is ask all 200 people to subscribe to me, wait until they do, and then make sure everything I post is tagged for friends only.

Or I can do this.  And if enough people do, maybe Facebook will take the hint.  I doubt it, but...

Honestly can't say I blame you at all. That's why I created a facebook page for my screen name for all things zombie.

I feel so dumb making a "zawmbie mutts" as a facebook account but facebook privacy settings are shit and I don't want to spend 5 hours adjusting things.

Awwwwwwwwwww, man!

PS: alternative solution (which I've seen used by some):  Two FB accounts.  One for close friends, one for the outward social networking tool that it has become.

I have many FB friends, but never share personal stuff online.  My close friends and family have never been inclined to FB land, so it's never been an issue for me.

Oh, well.

If I was starting now I'd probably do something like that, Zak, but it started out as a social thing.  Why would I need any more than that?  To try to switch now would just get chaotic, I think.  And Facebook would learn nothing! :)

But who knows... maybe in a month I'll do just that.

I'm still keeping the fan page, mind you.  But for now... just slashed two dozen names out of my list.  :-\

I purged the entire damn thing except my personal one which I rarely use.

Long story short it was a hassle but the final straw was getting all these notifications that people were trying to log in from Mexico.  ???

Yes, I'd read The Zombie Survival Guide as many times as the next guy, but my whole Z-Plan revolved around -not- getting close enough to the deadheads in order to fight them in hand-to-hand combat. No thanks. Just stay the hell away and put one between their eyes from a safe distance.

Two weeks provided you don't touch anything.  Log in once, just for a second, and it shuts the timer off and assumed you've decided to keep your account.   :-\

Apparently I survived the pogrom. :)

At any rate, I wanted to point out that I've notice I get quite a few of those sidebar blurbs (from a couple of relatives) with people "liking" or commenting on others' posts or photos.  Quite often I can only observe the item in question, even if I'd like to "like" it (what an odd thing to say, hm?).

I assume this is because the original poster has adjusted all their settings for "Friends only" (as I have, in fact).

I'm mad at Facebook, too. From now on, I'm sticking solely to MySpace!
